No, I don't have pics of the gsl, I just got it. All stock but still very nice :) It sounds like the pump but it isn't that loud, how do I check the timing on these engines.

    00' corolla pings :(

Hi guys, new member, need a little help with my corolla. It's started to mess up on me lately, pings if I give it more than 1/4 throttle, it you try and hit it from the start it just bogs out completely. When I try to accelerate more than *normal it bogs down but still accelerates but slower. I hear a whine coming from the trunk so I'm thinking it might be my fuel pump messing up, but then again my timing comes into play and my valve clearences (which have never been looked at, 94k on the clock?) If I can get some insight from a toyota guru it'd help me alot, how do I check the timing on these engines anyway, how do I hook up the gun? To the wires going into the top of the plug?

if you hear a whining from the trunk, that's DEFINITELY the fuel pump.

as a side question - got pics of the GSL? :D

Your timing should be good unless your timing belt is slipping or starting to go. Unfortunately the timing is "mainly" controlled by the ECU, so it shouldn't be the problem. I would check the fuel pump because it sounds like your either running rich or lean (most likely lean from the faulty fuel pump.) Any CEL's. Another possibility would be something like a crank position sensor, or possibly an 02 senser (but not likely that it's the 02 sensor, too dramatic a change.)

Do these cars have check engine lights in them? wouldn't those sensor mishaps cause my light to go on? I'll only hear the pump when crusing at like 50mph, it's a decent whine coming from the trunk.

Most cars have Check Engine Lights (CEL'S). If the car misses or is running too lean, then the CEL will definitely go off. Since yours isn't going off, I doubt if there's a major problem yet. With my car, at low RPM's at WOT, it sounds like my car is bogging out, but I know it isn't. Could this be your case?

might be a slight possibility it's the MAF sensor? I had a similar problem minus the whine coming from the trunk.. does your car idle weird?

the car idles fine, just is a little louder than usual. If I floor it, it boggs out and doesn't go. I changed the plugs 1month ago so thats out of the picture. Air filter is clean, but I'm not sure about the maf, I am going to go clean it right now. Could of my valves got out of wack? I don't just want to pop in and check them, I'd rather get some insight.

well if you were running rich you wouldnt be be pinging, you would just be bogging out the motor. If the pump is whining somthing is probably cloggin it or is cause it to stick on the pump cycle. If your pump is failing and your not getting enough fuel pressure this would definitely cause you to lean out and ping and if it cant keep the pressure up you definitely wouldnt be able to get much throttle out of it. What i would do first is check the pumps ground. If the ground is good then it is time to replace the pump. It not that hard of a job, it will require 2 jack stands a bucket and about 2 hours of your time.

So where is the pump located, on the top of the tank? I've checked through autozone and its like $165 for a pump, any cheaper prices out there? I'm sure the pumps clogs or it's going out, the car has 94k on it.
