    00' corolla pinging/ power loss

Car has 95,500 on it. I haven't been able to find the source of the pinging. It happens under light or heavy loads, right before it switches gears. Car has hardly any power, if I punch it from a stand still the car just bogs and does not move at all. Trying to accelerate is nearly impossible, It will go up like 5mph, bog down a little the go up 5 more miles, bog down again etc. Everyone says "Oh the filter in the tank is lifetime, blah, blah" and that the pinging is normal which means all corollas are messed up. No CEL's have came on, just cleaned my maf which was covered in dirt, didn't change a thing. Could I have to have my ecu reset or something. People say the timing is controlled by the ecu, would clearing it put my time back on if it's off? Also my dipstick has like burnt oil on it, it's goldish color, is that normal or is that the dreaded corolla oil burning problem? I need some help with this piston engine, it's pretty much the first piston engine I have worked on but I know what your talking about if you whip out some engine lingo.

You'll need to rebuild your motor.
Your seals are probably shot, you'll need to have your valves lashed.
Replace piston rings, bearings... the whole 9 yards.

95,000 on a Corolla... did you abuse that car?

    bam I'm the man
I just went out cause I finally found out where the fuel pump was, cleaned the dirty ass sock and the baby runs like kitten.

Doesn't ping at all. Thanks for the response though. And I didn't beat the car, just the normal acceleration getting into traffic. I have my rx7's to haul balls. I drive the car everyday, pop out my other cars only on the weekends mostly thats why the miles are so high. I have to comute about 14mi.s aday to and from work along with going to my friends which is 10mi.s away.

Good job on finding where the problem was. When the same thing happened to my 99, it was the plugs arcing causing 2 out of the 4 cylinders to misfire.

Rx7, how difficult was it to get to the pump? Did you have to put it up on a hoist and lower the entire tank down and undo all supporting brackets holding the tank?

IIRC, it's accessible by removing the rear seat. The pump unbolts and simply lifts right out of the tank.

it started to come back actually, cleaned the filter again but no luck. The check engine light popped on, brought it to toyota and they changed the belt tensioner saying that it was the problem but it wasn't. They didn't clear the CEL either. Pop the hood and you can see the engine shaking a little bit. Kinda starting to sound like a diesel now. I'm open for all suggestions. The replacement of the tensionor did quiet it down alittle bit though. Could the timing be off? I have a haynes but they DO NOT tell you anything about timing for the 98-up. How often do the valves need to be adjusted on these engines?

I assume you mean a flowmeter or pressure tester or some such?

The Autozone here doesn't rent them out-- but they do sell them for $40.00. Maybe Autozone in your area has different policies...

Did you ever check the flow rate and pressure of the pump? It could be cutting in and out. We know that after you cleaned the filter it seemed to help for a while-- but now that the problem has returned it could be a failure of the pump to provide fuel consistently.

You may also have a problem with an injector or two if any of the debris you cleared from the filter had actually made it into the pump and was sent along...

I'll just buy one, I know I'll need it again in the future anyway. My belt slipped, thats what the toyota shop said, could this be the reason for the bad condition of the engine.

Wait-- it's a 2000 Corolla? And it has the 1ZZ-FE? I could be wrong-- but don't all of them have timing CHAINS?

^ I know something is still wrong. They said that is why the CEL is on, they just didn't clear it??!? I will just take it to the family mechanic down the street. I took it to toyota cause it is a certified used car so I saved 68$ of the $110 price. Thanks for the insight though.

I'd hope so, cause there is no cam gear on the outside. THe guy at the shop replaced the belt tensionor with help with the cold start issue (putted around till it warmed up) and it hardly pings anymore. But it still has hardly any power, Your cruising, then you give it a quarter more gas and you can feel it bog down but still accelerate. Can my CEL be on without having something wrong? Like if they fix the problem and don't clear the ecu?

You should try taking the car to a competent mechanic. It sounds like the dealership has no clue if they claim the engine has a timing belt. The 1ZZ-FE has a timing chain.

Did they give or show you the old parts? Did they document what the codes were returned from the ECU concerning the CEL?

Obviously something is wrong if it still pings, has hardly any power, and bogs down when you give it gas.

But saving $68.00 off of the $110 is no bargain if the bogging was something completely different all along, like a clogged exhaust system (the catalytic convertor or a crushed exhaust pipe being possible causes.)

That covers a lot of items... because no one specific cylinder was pointed out, it could be more than just ignition. Of course, check for moisture in the wiring leading to the coil packs, check for moisture between the coil pack and the spark plug, and so on.

The pinging and bogging down could signal an overly lean condition, such as from a cracked intake manifold. You may even have faulty fuel injectors, or a problem with the EGR. You may wish to start with the EGR valve-- this being a mechanical system more likely to show intermittent/variable failures.

Theres not a single thing about 00' having an egr valve in my haynes. It just states 1997 and earlier engines, nothing about 98-up.

as always, you come to the rescue :D. I'll start with the EGR then, then pop out my injectors and get them flow tested. When I took out the pump I noticed some crud down at the bottom of the tank (more than what a 5yr old car should have) my 88' 7 didn't even have that much. Could that crap have gotten through the so-called "life-time" filter and clog it causing my pump to not function properly or clogged up my injectors?

My turn to forget what engine has what... the 1ZZFE does lack the EGR.

I cleaned my little filter sock on the pump and it runs alot better but still feels like it's misfiring. Could my timing have been messed cause it leans out so the crankshaft sensor gets wrong readings and further messes my timing up?

Well, I hope it's a real rescue and not false hope, or just sending you down the wrong path.

On the subject of the fuel pump-- if the filter were clogged that badly, perhaps it caused damage to the pump due to cavitation. That gets us back to testing it, of course. And it is possible something got past the filter and lodged itself in an injector.

I'm dismayed that your car has such a strange and seemingly severe problem-- barring abuse, it should be practically brand new (my '01 Corolla LE is garage kept and really looks wonderful, and has performed like a champ this whole time.) I hope you get it sorted out, and for not a whole heck of a lot more money....
