HardDrive Noise

Can anyone tell me if this sound is good or bad? It happened to my old gateway but that was only when the computer was real cold. But now my PowerSpec is making this noise and sometimes its loud and other times its not. sometimes it doesn't even happen.

I just banged on the case and it goes away but it comes right back real slow. but its not as loud as before. its not screws loose cause i checked that. :sad:

thats a god awful noise... I would say that its going bad... but the good news is you can upgrade...

the funny thing is, right now, its not making any noise at all. I gotta see what I can get now.

That sounds like fan noise to me, like on the CPU, video card, or power supply. Have you verified that it is the HD? HD sounds are usually very whinny and loud, and do not go away when you smac it.

I say it is one of your fans going bad. Open the case and listen closer.

That video was with the case open. I checked the fan and everything else. I narrowed the noise down to the HD. I even took out the removable backup drive and it wasn't that.

Wow, then you better replace that drive ASAP! I have never heard such a horrible noise from a HD.

I say get something big if you can afford it, like a 120 GB from seagate. I trust seagate more than the other brands like maxtor, etc.

Well hopefully I have the option to reinstall WinXP from the DVD. If I do, then I'll be looking for a new HD.

This is what is listed under the computer specs: 80GB 7200RPM Ultra ATA/100

by going on that info, what HD do you think would best fit me (company wise, durability, etc). Ignore the size cause I know I must go bigger.

EDIT: Also the best tool I found for cloning the drive is from Acronis, and the name is Acronis True Image Workstation.

There is a tutorial somewhere on the net, and the demo gives you full functionality for 15 days. Enough to clone your drive to the bigger one without any problems.

Thats whats up. Thx for the info. Can anyone explain SATA to me. I've been looking and I see Ultra ATA/100 and then I see SATA. I know what IDE and SCSI are...this SATA is new to me...(its been a minute since I updated my knowledge on computers...)

But to go SATA you either need a MB that suports the connection, or a PCI card.

Not a problem man! What is sweet about SATA is that you can get a SATA PCI card and a external RAID SATA enclosure that will give you some nice speed and reliability, Of course that is like a 1000 dollar investment!

I recently did this for a client of mine. SATA Card, and external 2 bay hot swappable with 2 SATA 500GB HD's with built in hardware RAID 1 built in.

Very nice for what he needed.

X, you were right. It was a fan. I forgot that my removable backup drive has a fan on the enclosure. I put my finger on the fan and the noise stopped, i took it out and the noise started again. So I just have to buy an enclosure which will only run me about 8.00. but i'm still gonna look at upgrading my harddrive regardless cause i need something bigger.

HA Told ya. I have listened to enough bad hardrives and fans in my short life to know the difference!

You can probably just replace the fan, or ommit it all together.
