    Amplifier power requirements?

What's the most powerful amp I can install on my 1997 Corolla without having to purchase another car battery to power my system? I'm looking into a 4-channel one at the moment.

Is there a general rule of thumb to follow when powering speakers? The ones I currently have are rated @ 35 watts RMS/channel.

I don't know much about car audio, so any suggestions are appreciated.

assuming you have an 80 amp alternator the very largest you could run is 960W rms

however, I have a 400W rms in my car and my lights dim when I have it turned up.

I didn't have any probs with dimming when i had a 600RMS amp after I got a yellow top. But that was back in the days.

I installed a second battery, cured all my problems, I asked a friend to lend me for a second one of his red tops, and 2 cheap 30$ batteries work better than 1 redtop... BUT... 2 optimas are for the win ;)

I run on 2, "maintance-free (my ass)" batteries 70$ total and no light dimming at all!
I do got 780w total draw 500amp max, 250watt output radio probably about 30w the reading of DVDs and decoding the MP3s

when I see slight light dimming I check the acid levels of the battery, then reseal them with some raw silicone and I'm good to go

Hell my lights dim when I open or close my windows. No system nothing. Just alarm lol. I think I have to reground the engine.
