2001 Corolla, Auto to Manual Conversion

Jerry decided to go with the 5-speed ECU instead of the resistor hack that I normally use. I didn't know this ahead of time (or I would have charged more!), but in the '01 the automatic ECU uses the newer style 4-plug setup and the manual uses the older style 3-plug setup. Weird huh? I had to repin EVERY SINGLE WIRE that goes to the ECU into the new plugs:

Then I went about installing the master cylinder. This install is a breeze in the Toyota Celicas, but in the Corolla it's EXTREMELY hard. There's just a tiny bit of room to get in there with a 90-degree drill adapter.

Then I installed the clutch pedal. I still need to swap the brake pedal and install some new performance-style pedals. More to come.

damn, yeah, that manual ECU looks just like the 98-00 manual and 3 spd autos. i think the 4 spd w/od is the only one with four plugs on the ecu. luckily most of the colors match up :) nice work as usual doc :)

wow, that sucks... when i did my conversion it was straight swap of the ECU's ... that looks like it sucked. :)

HA HA Doc. That looks familar. Oh I found a Manual ECU for the Corolla on eBay for $20 and I swapped that out to gain a 6100 redline instead of my 6000. Might be easier next time.

Oh yes, you are exactly correct, the 3-speed uses the older style plugs as well. :)

LOL, yea the master cylinder is a PITA for me as well, when I did mines, I mistdrilled 2 out of the 3 holes and had to widen em with tin snips, not one of my finest hours. Ouch, wireing the ecu looks like a pain, should've charged for a custom engine harness, LOL.

BTW, where'd you usually get those resistors? I couldn't find them at radiohut so I just gank a ECU and called it a day.

Most electronics supply stores have them, they are 25watt 15ohm.

Somebody did the conversion couple years ago and he used 00+ auto Celica GT's ECU. It's plug and play.

oh yeah. I forgot about that. Apparently you can plug in a Celica GT ECU into a 4 speed 00-02 Corolla and gain more power from it's 7000 RPM redline and map. You just lose the ability to shift into reverse, which should not be a problem with a manual conversion.

Can the Corolla 1ZZ-FE handle the 7000rpm redline? If so is there a module I can buy to set my red line on my 01Corolla?

Yes, it can. I think the Emanage Ultimate can change the redline.

The eManage Ultimate can not change the redline from what I've been reading on the Celica boards.
