Need help to repaint my rims

Can you gus give me some suggestions of how to repaint my rims?

I bought the rims used. The orginal color of the rims were white, but the previous owner painted them gold with some spray paint. Right now the gold paint is peeling off, and now I want to repaint it to gunmetal.

My friend tried to wash it with power wash hoping to peel off all the gold paint but no luck. And then he tried to use thinner, but still didn't work.

Does anyone has any idea how to get rid of the gold paint? My friend said something about "sand bust" or something like that. Is it expensive to do? Do I have to use sand paper to sand the rims one by one?

Oh, by the way, I want to do everything by myself (yup, I'm cheap), so please don't tell me to go to shop.

go to your local hardware store or such place and buy this stuff called Graffiti remover...i removes paint very well...just be carful not to spray it on you and not to breath alot in...it works like acid and basically disolves the paint to the bare metal

What kind of paint should be used on rims? How should one prepare the rims for paint, do they need primer or something? I want to paint mines gunmetal or black. Oh yeah, also, my rims have some deep scrapes, should I just file them down or will they look kinda weird after I paint them?

your friend probabbly meant sand blasting to remove that paint, that would be the best idea but that WOULD require you to go to a shop.as far as painting the wheels' the best way to keep it on there is spray it correctly and bury it under clear coat

Autozone sells duplicolor wheel paint, i think they make a gunmetal. But once you get the gold paint off sand the wheel and then apply the wheel paint and after 5 or 6 coats spray 3 or 4 coats of clear and you'll be good.

I don't think you need primer with the duplicolor wheel coat, I don't know if I would use clear either because it would be easier to go back and touch it up if you needed to later without it. I would highly reccommend that duplicolor wheel coat stuff though, it sticks well. I actually bought 3 cans of it thinking I would need it all but did all 4 of my wheels with one can.

i would use primer. primer stickes best to the metal and paint sticks best to the primer.

    sand paper does the trick!

    Some little update:
I found some "paint stipper" stuff in RONA. Just need to apply it on the rims, and ALL the paint on the rims peeled off!!! It worked like magic!!!
I tried it on 1 rim first, took me around 2 hrs. And then I did the other 3 rims in less then 3 hrs. A lot easier then I thought, and no sanding. :D

    fuck all that crap

just go to kragens, autozone, whatever,

    1. get a bottle of aircraft stripped
    2. spray on the rim, leave for 5 mins
    3. spray with water and wipe down dry, use air compressor to get the rest of the water out (lug nut holes and crap)
    4. wetsand with 1500 or 2000 grit
    5. if you have gashes or curbings, do what i did, spray like 10 coats of primer on it, spray each coat LIGHTLY, so light that after the 5th or 6th coat, you can actually see the wheel covered in primer..do it for however much you need to fill up the curbings, my rims were fawked up, and i killed 2 cans of primer for 4 wheels
    6. let it dry, wetsand with 2000 grit
    7. let it dry completely, use air compressor
    8. paint with whatever paint you want, wetsand in between coats with 2000 grit
    9. clear coat, more clear coat = more bling bling
    10. let it dry overnight in garage or something
