    Big Engine Problem- Need Help

I have a 01 corolla ce. my dad had it as a taxi so it has 180,000 i got it when it had 170,000. On the highway a clicking noise started , it progressed until my car shut off.
I've talked to two mechanics and they have said my engine is done. However another one told me i just might just need the block. The headers and everything else is fine.
I found a 2005 corolla engine for $1000. The mechanic said it was $500.
I wanted to check with you guys first.
Does anybody know how much would it be for a new engine and labor work?
Also, how much would it be to get a new block?
Any info, ill be really thankful.

Fist off a 2005 engine won't fit your 2001. You need to find a 00-02 engine (1ZZ-FE) with VVT-i or a non VVT-i version if you buy the ECU to go with it. I got a used engine with 30k miles on it for $900 from a wrecking yard with a 90 day warranty and labor and parts to install it was about $1200, It shouldn't cost more then 600 - 700 in labor but my friend totally screwed me over when the car was half apart because he lied his ass off to me. Anyways. Good luck :D

I believe the 05 engine is the same. It should be the 1zz-fe.

    Aren't 04+ the 'drive-by-wire' setup?

    I thought Toyota switched over to the 2ZZ-FE w/ VVTL-i in the 2003+ Corolla's. I'm probably mistaken.

Correct me if Im wrong but Im 95% sure that all corollas 98-07 use the 1zz-fe. Only the XRS line which was in 05 and 06 used the 2zz-ge with vvtl-i. Rest were vvt-i.

The 03+ is still a 1ZZ-FE minus the XRS which is the 2ZZ-FE and its a drive-by-wire throttle setup.

So a 03+ engine will fit but you will need to some major modding to switch from cable to wire. Best bet is get a 01-02 VVTI motor

If the engines are all the same, why can you install a TRD supercharger on an '03 but not an '06? :p

If something is ticking, I have a really hard time believing you need a freakin BLOCK...sounds like valves..or rod/bearing..? Ticking or clunking?

So the 03+ Corolla's don't have VVTL-i? They have just plain old VVT-i?

Yup, looks like just a 1zz-fe in the 98-07 Corolla, except XRS.

BS, 03 and up has a drive by wire setup and other minor differences, simply take a look at the engine and you will see. the 98-02 models used the same system, w/an exception the 00-02 used a EDI, Electronic Direct Ignition, the the 98-99 uses the distrubutorless ignition. 03 up are slightly different, and require diffrent modifications, the XRS shares nothing w, the rest of the lineup due to the different engine set up.

no they don't all engines may be the same but the company changes minor things such as design and setup for more fuel efficiency and whatever torque they can produce.

BS, if that were true then my friends car was a defect model from the the dealer and his in an early 04 model. Not all cars were made with DBW it depends if the manufactuing code was the NA or JM manufacture.

Only 05 and 06 were vvtl-i. Only the 2z-ge is vvtl-i. Rest are just plain vvt-i. Doesnt the hellishmantis have a 2zz-ge in the 8th gen? So if everyone here is saying 05+ has drive by wire then it is still possible because he had it done by the doc himself.

drive by wire started in 05, 04 didn't have it, someone can just go take pics of an 04, i can take pic of an 05 cause my mom has it and i checked it myself. vvtl-i is only XRS corolla, all others are VVT-i

03-04 models are the 1zz vvt-i engine w. normal throttle cables.

05+ S, CE, LE use the 1zz vvt-i engine w. drive by wire

    05-06 XRS uses the 2zz vvtl-i.

There is some difference on the 05+ models with the throttle body that prevent attaching the supercharger directly.

    Back on topic...

I suggest you figure out what is causing the tapping before just bailing out and buying a new engine.

If it's a clicking, sounds like lifters or valves...if it's a full on knocking it's probably a rod.

I have pretty rough lifter tick in my truck, but I'm not going to run out and buy an engine because of it.

That would be my suggestion. :)

so if it is drive by wire then just swap out the throttle body and keep cable...

Probably would be easier to find an 03 if that, just to avoid even more labor charges.

valves yes, lifters no, the valve sits under the camshaft journals' with a crown above the spring.

You never heard the lifter tick?

To be honest, I worded it wrong, valves sound more like a tapping, lifters have more of a ticking sound.

Though, every Toyota I have ever come across gets a case of lifter tick after about 10k miles.
