Thats a real good question...it couldve been an accident since he was still somewhat new to flying (just purchased his plane a little before August)...yet the only thing that throws me off are two things.

These are two reasons why I think he couldve done it intentionally...

-possibly because of how his career was going at that moment...he got traded to the Yankees like 3 months ago and said he expected to win all the time and be backed up by his new fellow teammates cuz he was playing for such a renowned team...and when one of his former team mates called him out and called him "a scab" to his old team, i doubt he took that lightly...

-if he knew he was in trouble while flying, he couldve deployed the parachute on his plane...he was flying a cirrus SR20, small plane, great for rich learners especially since they have a parachute on them so if he knew he was in trouble, why didnt he just deploy the chute allowing him to fall to the ground safely..plus, when they teach you to fly, they teach you how to land the plane safely in the event the engine decides not to work...in this case, you would just simply maneuver it by gliding to a safe spot...in which he coudlve glided it to the water, not injuring anyone, and deploy the chute...

Or most likely malfunction of the plane that turned into an accident.

Easy to talk with 20/20 hindsight, but if you ever been in any type of accident you know how fast things happen.

Yeah, a guy that I work with has crashed 3 planes in his life and he acts like that isn't any big deal if your career pilot

With your 2nd statement. If he did have a parachute, the odds of him landing safely was slim. NYC is full of buildings of all heights. There is no way he would of been able to parachute safely cause if it would of caught the edge of the building, he would of been screwed. or if hte wind would of picked up (which happens around tall buildings like that) then he would of lost control of that.

Also, the only place I can see him landing the plane safely, if that, is the Hudson/East River (like you said). If he would of landed that thing in the street or highway, there would of been more then 4 deaths. I think i heard something about he had lost control at about 59th st, so unless he could get to an airport to land safely, there was no where to go but the river or into a building.

aside from the fact that e_andree mentioned that the parachute failed...his flight path was over the water but when he made an extremely sharp U-turn, he couldnt control it and crashed into the building...so to me, it seems like if there was any error, it was with the pilot...

That is true. What I don't understand is that if he knew he was going down around the 59th st Bridge, why didn't he just let it coast onto the water. This accident is gonna raise alot of questions. E had me wondering about the accident vs suicide but if he says he tried to use the parachute, then it couldn't have been suicide. This whole thing left me

Just wait for the NTSB report that will come out in a few months, then you'll know exactly what happened.

i dunno how much they can actually interpret since they have no actual data recorder to use...

That is just one asset that they use, and remember they are specialized in every type of transportation accident, not just aviation accidents.

I knew it was an accident when we first heard about it up here, but people will always jump to conclusions about things like this. You can't really blame them after the shock this city was put into after 9/11 though.
