you can swap in any A series easily and S series with a bit more work, there's been many conversions here and there.. not so much here.

    Thanks...
So what would be needed to do a simple 1.6 liter engine swap to a 1.8 liter swap.
Would I need to swap out the tranny too?

As an owner of a 7AFE, I can honestly say you're not missing much from the extra .2L. but for a 4A to 7A swap you'd need the engine w/ full wiring harness and ECU. The tranny depends on if you have a AT or MT.. It's easiest with a MT or if you decide to swap in a MT.

4a-fe came from 93-95 models. 7a-fe were on 96-97 models. the wire harness is all the wires that go through out the whole car that connect to the computer (ecu). 4a = 1.6 7a= 1.8.

The 4AGE was in the 88-92 Corolla GT-S, and in the 1st gen. MR-2 I believe... the 4AGZE was also in the MR2 (Supercharged 1.6 I4)...

But, the 4AGZE was also in the Levin (sort of a sporty Corolla in Japan), your best bet is to purchase a front clip of a 4AGZE Levin from a Japanese Engine Importer, that way,y ou'll have all the parts you need for your swap...

What year of Corolla do you have?

my car is the same year and I have a 1.6L 4A-FE 16v DOHC with a C-50 5 speed manual transmission (base model). This is only on 93-97 Base and CE (96-97 models). If your car is an auto, then it's the 3 speed. Does this help on what you actually have?

An engine swap will give you the most hp/dollar. It's hard to make power with these engines with simple bolt ons, so your best alternative to a swap would be to create a custom turbo setup for your 4afe. From what I hear, If you turbo the stock 4afe you're limited to rather low boost levels, ie around 5 or 6 psi. From there I believe you would have to do some internal and/or head work to get more respectable boost levels.

Bottom line: The best way to make power with these cars is to save up 3-5 grand and swap in one of the Toyota engines that was meant for performance, the 4AGE, 4AGZE or 3SGTE.
