What engine is best for me?

I would just want to get people's opinion/s on what engine i can swap with my 88 corolla FX a/t 2door hatch. I dont really know too much hands on so ill probably let someone else (a shop) do it for me.

Here are some stuff to consider:
-ill swap engines to go faster
    -engine with flexible upgrades
    -manual tranny
-i live in plains so alot of straightaways

Ill appreciate all your opinions, negative or possitive.

    Any 4A series of motor...

4AGE - Anywhere from 112 to 130hp depending on specifics, cheap enough engine to find.
4AGE 20V - Silvertop or Blacktop - 165 to 170hp, never sold in North America, but relatively cheap for a *JDM* engine, they don't quite make that much power here due to our lower octane for gas, but they do offer 5 valves per cylinder and ITB's (which sounds amazing).
4AGZE - 145 to 170hp, again, depending on the specific engine. This one is supercharged, and because of that, it also has alot of torque and stronger internals (more power is only a pulley away for the supercharger). Probably the most expensive, but still not that expensive.

If you have money to burn though, just swap in a 3S-GTE and call it a day (200 to 265hp, and lots of torque).

im guessing you are not sure if the 3S-GTE fits? i would have chosen it cuz:
-blacktops are kinda hard to find
    -less mods for higher output

this article kinda gave me more knowledge about 4A's.
(not that i dont like them or anything)

I recommend the 4ag silvertop or the 4agze turbo, both would fit the car very nicely.

All the 4A series will fit without any major modifications, the 3S-GTE will fit, but takes quite a bit more work...

If you can purchase a front-clip, that would be even easier because you'll have all the brackets and such to line everything up perfectly for your engine bay, plus you'll have all the small misc. parts that are needed with an engine swap...

Sigh... I need to win the lottery...

i think id rather just RWd it for better drag performance. making it 4wd will require me to get a stronger engine.... im sure i can barely hit 230's with swap

You're on a Corolla Enthusiast site, trust me, we all know how it feels to have people look at our cars and think they are slow :p

Whats your budget (cause that will limit your options)?

I like it when people look at my car and think I'm slow. Because it makes them that much more depressed and sick to themselves when I walk on them :D Psssst...

Hes got a turbo lol. Drop in a 3sgte and convert it to 4wd. I think the link I gave for the 3sgte clip comes with 4wd tranny along with lsd. Youd have one sick rolla lol.

Just stick with the us spec 4ages and you be find. pretty easy swap and parts arent hard to find if you know where to go. club4ag is a good place for it. Go with the the redtop 4ag that came in the last gen ae92 rolla gts or from a prizm gsi.

The Redtop 4AGE Smallport are quite hard to find though, at least with low enough mileage and in good condition... best bang for the buck is the 4AGZE imho... its still a relatively cheap engine, makes good power and torque stock, and its easy to get more power out of it, plus it was sold in north america in the MR2's, so parts are available at a decent price...

    Ohhh, I know it's slow :) :p
