Newbie Q regarding 1ZZ-FE motor

Just bought a 99 Corolla CE and know that I have a 1ZZ motor. My question is, is the 1ZZ from the 98-99 Corolla have the same specs (HP and torque) with the 00-02? Does mine have the VVT-i? Do any of them have the VVT-i? Thanks in advance.

1999 Toyota Corolla
Standard Engine 1.8L 120 hp I4, 120lb/ft.

2002 Toyota Corolla w/ VVT-i
Standard Engine 1.8L 125 hp I4, 125lb/ft.

9th Gen 2003 Corolla w/ VVT-i
Standard Engine 1.8L 130 hp I4, 125lb/ft.

Ahhh, so the VVT-i did not come out on the 1ZZ motor until 2002. Thank you!

VVT-i on the 8th gen Corollas started in 2000 and continue on. Only the 1998-1999 Corollas made do without VVT-i. I think Deebs was just pointing out the differences between the Corolla 1ZZ-FE variants.

Correct, sorry, I just picked one of the cars between 2000 & 2002. Forgot to specify that VVT-i was introduced on the corolla in '00. Sorry!

this might be a dumb question, but what all would have to be swapped out to get vvt-i?

As far as I know, the ECU and you'd need the VVT-i head. ...someone will probably correct me on this, but off the cuff I believe that's all you need.

Need the ignition system off the VVT-i donor (coil on plug, vs the external coil packs and wires), ECM, head, valvecover, some wiring, maybe some more. Probably not worth the trouble - you're not missing much between the two engines, powerwise, to justify the work or cost.

or maybe just the valve train... instead of a whole head... but then again, what do i know, im only a UTI student... lol... j/k...

Probably at this point, just worth swapping in a 2zz-GE.
