I Can't Take The Damn Lugs Off!! Ahhhh!!!

Ok you can call me a sissy or whatever but damn, I had a flat on the freeway like a few days ago. So I pulled over and brought out the spare. I tried to loosen the lugs on the driver's front wheel...it won't budge!

I didn't jack up the car, and I used the cheap-o toolkit the trunk provided. I kept trying to turn it counter-clockwise. I even got to the point where I was LIFTING the car instead of turning the lug. What the hell am I doing wrong?

i'm a pretty small guy, so I had the same problem. I just made sure the lug wrench was on snug and applied pressure w/ my foot. Worked fine for me.

The fronts seem to tighten a bit more, If someone got happy with the impact gun that could be the problem.

I have a small Metric 4 way lug wrench. That would help some.

I have also read that some folks carry a section of pipe to slide over factory lug wrench for more leverage.

Buy a breaker bar and the right socket and throw away the stock crap away.

keep a metal pipe to slide over the stock wrench. I've used a metal pipe on many occasions including removing my struts and exhaust. It's my favorite cheap way of opening hard to move bolts.

try use those tool in the trunk..and use your body weight on the thing that you turn on the lug~ i mean stand on that tool and jump a bit..........it will loose it really easy~

I've had some tight enough that I needed my 18" breaker bar. That took care of it.

I tried the method with putting your weight on it. That worked for a few lugs, but some were mad tight for some weird reason. I ended up going to my friend's place and it took three of us TOGETHER to loosen some of those bolts.

My new wheels are on, but damn it took a lot of effort.

I do this too. It really works. And I only weight 135 lbs.

try some WD-40 on the lug, but seeing how you were on the highway i guess its not likely you'd 'happen' to have that in the car. When you drive, the heat generated could have caused the lugs to lock up.

also if they have been over tightened that could be the cause of your problem.

i always torque my wheels down to toyota spec.

I broke the stock lug nut wrench in half one day and then i broke the 4 way wrech too and thats when i said fuck it I am getting a breaker bar

yeah they were probably overtightened. Ive had shops put em on so tight I used my 4-pt wrench, stood on it, jumped on it and it didnt budge......then again I only weigh 125.

I have an impact gun now, so no problem taking my lugs off at all.

Lol I wasn't standing on mine, I was using it by hand and felt it just twist and break!

I mean if you are putting over 100 lbs torque on the lugs then that is just not necessary.

this is kinda drifting off-topic but i bought lug locks from pepboys and the special key for it fit into the little etched in grooves of the lug lock and one day I had a flat so I put the key in and I guess it wasnt pushed all the way in so I turned the wrench really hard the first couple of times and ended up screwing up the lug lock to the point where the key would just slide on the lug....so I had to get the locks drilled out for $20 each....but the lady that I talked to at the place that drilled them out for me was like, you seem like a nice guy, its free today.....so that was alright....but the downside was that I had to drive my car a two miles on a near flat tire which ended up screwing up the tire.....so thats why I ride on steelies today....because my rims need some new tires...

Not always the case, many lugs nuts are spec'd to be torqued to 100 ft/lbs or more. It's actually not that much.

dude on a corolla it should only be torqued 80 ft/lb and most of the asian cars should be 80 also

hahahahahaha, I torque down to 100 to 110. I dont feel like having anything come flying off while i drive

i tighten it until i hear it creak...hehe

im sure you know what toyotas recomended torque specs are for the corolla..... if you dont, ill tell you that I KNOW its nowhere near 100lb/ft

No I'm thinking of bigger American cars. IIRC the SHO is supposed to be 105 ft/lbs.
