    Question about the altis

If anyone is familiar with the altis corolla does the engine have different timing as far as the vvt-i is concerned? Some one was telling me that their altis "spools at 3500" rather than "4100 like the USDM." Any truth to this? I've never heard anything like that, but then again I never knew to look up on the difference between the altis and the USDM.

I think he said he was an 05 if that makes a difference.

Thats what I'm trying to figure out...The exact terminology is, as used by him, "he difference between my car and yours now is that my car vvti spools upat 3500, no matter what kind of performance parts you've put on your car, unless you changed the timing, it'll always spool at 4100."

I'm not a big fan of the "R word," but yeah everything else in the conversation has been very exagerated (beating s2000s and Mustang GTs while having a slightly modded rolla).

Well the Altis/Corolla will never *spool* when stock, secondly, VVT-i is always on, basically its always varying the valve timing a little, VVTL-i is the only engine that will *spool* (lol), and thats at ~6200rpm.

He might be talking about power peak, or when the engine *feels* like its beginning to pull harder (my engine starts pulling noticeably harder around ~4800rpm or so). The difference could be that the Altis is available with smaller engines in some markets, which would obviously have different power characteristics...

You know originally I was w/ teevee with that thinking. I just laughed off spooling and gave him the benefit of the doubt, but then when I reread it I thought to myself "WTF mate?!" The convo I'm having w/ this kid is great, I might post it in the jokes/humor section when its over with.

interesting.. i have an altis.. i'm pretty sure i didnt see a turbo under the hood anywere last i checked.. maybe your friend was talking about the radiator fan spooling up? hehe.. i think theres a torque dip between 3800 n 4100 rpm on 1zz-fe's.. which he may be referring to.. i've noticed it pulls harder above 4100 rpm.. so maybe thats what it is? nothing special happenin at 3500 in my altis though..

and vvt-i is continuously variable if i'm not mistaken.. no vtec on/off thing..

Yeah the VVTL-i would be the on/off sort of deal. I don't know where he is getting this 3500 number from, but I figured I ask because ignorance isn't the law.

Thanks for the input though guys.

The older system, just VVT, had that on/off behavior (Blacktop 4AGE for example) - oil control valve would open at a specified RPM.

The newer VVT-i system on the 2000+ Corollas and other cars in the Toyota/Lexus line up are continously variable - no switch like behavior (hence the i-tag >> for "intelligence").

yesss. corolla's from 2000 and up came with a turbo system toyota named 'vvt-i' and pushes out 125hp and 125lb/ft of torque. it spools fully at 4000 rpm. vvt-i stands for 'very very turboish induction' .

ehh im just messin. im bored.

:signW00t2 Yeah I saw that interview video too, where he's going 'nahh, it's a sound like wooot woooooottt!'

but yeah, vvt-i is active from 500rpm to redline, so, if your engine is running, it's working.
