    Marvel Mystery Oil

Has anyone here used Marvel Mystery Oil? The shop that installed my motor noticed a faint ticking noise which was later determined to be a sticky lifter. They claimed that its nothing to be concerned about but if the noise gets to me just to put some Marvel Mystery Oil in and the noise will disappear. Has anyone used this stuff before? This was the first I have ever heard of it. I guess it has been around for an eon and a lot of sites claim its great stuff. I even found one site that suggests putting this stuff in your airplanes :D But I figured I would toss up a post on the forum to see if anyone has any actual experience in the Corolla community using this stuff. They even sell it by the gallon on Amazon.com. So I'll probably pick up a gallon.

I've heard it's nothing but automatic transmission fluid. which is much more abrasive than regular oil. you could probably get the same results by dumping in some atf for 100 miles before you change your oil.

If it's just a sticky lifter, just go buy a $1.99 bottle of oil detergent. It'll clean the gunk out of there no problem. Good thing to do to avoid any sort of lifter tick is to use BG MOA. Great stuff. The MI3000 is awesome too (I think it's called something else now...Carbon Fighter...something to that degree.)

My first motor has a tick too, just not as bad as this one so I figured this time I would do something about it. But yeah these 1ZZ's do like to make a little racket. :D

It cleans the gunk off the lifter so that doesn't stick...and then tick when it releases.

actually the noise isn't from sticky lifters... i've done extensive research into this. while *some* instances are due to sticky lifters, in Toyotas, especially the 1ZZ it is MOSTLY (mind you not ALWAYS) due to a slight collapse of the spacer inside the lifter cap. (shims on earlier versions) --- if the clearances are not EXACTLY correct, you will get a bit of a rattle, or tick from the head. When i built my new head and was installing new lifter caps, every one of them measured right except for two that were only a thousandth or two near the lower tolerance level. Mind you it was still within specifications... well, oddly those are the two that make EXTREMELY minor ticks.

Jer, I'd suggest after you get comfy with the new motor and everything is running good - you may want to (and this is a pretty simple mod) get some new cams for your ride. they make a nice stage 2 which works well with turbo'd cars and will actually give you a lil bit more hp and tq. When doing this, get new caps (you'll need a shop to do this if you're not comfortable with this aspect) based on the space between the top of the valve and the base of the cam (lobe side) --- if done correctly and partially biased towards the higher end of the tolerance spectrum, you should eliminate the noises and any possibility of a future occurance. :)

all MOA is, is ATF. ATF has detergants in it to keep everything real clean. works wonders when you add it to oil, also most defanatly helps with the lifter rattle of the 1zz motor, doesen't get rid of it just tones it down, a bit.

Get new caps? The bucket style followers? Sorry, the term caps doen't mean much to me. If that's what you mean where can you get them (besides Toyota)?

caps are the buckets yes... they are capped sleeves that go over the valve and have a set sized spacer in the top of them to handle the shimming/spacing of the cap to the cam lobe.

    hehe all good :)

Good news and bad news. The good news is the shop took my head off the old motor and discovered the piston was not siezed after all which means the rod just snapped under the force of the boost. The other good news is that the head is in perfect shape so they are going to give it back to me. So now I have something to rebuild off the car in my garage! Woo Hoo. The bad news is the throwout bearing went tits up on my car 2 days after I got it back from the engine swap so its in the shop again until further notice :(
