you wanting new or used? 18,000 new wont get you very far, just go to new car websites and they have the base price of all cars listed. thats what i did when i was in the market at first that way i could narrow it down.

the is300 is certainly an awesome car, just watch out buying a used car. Your getting a way better car then the 00 rolla but its only a 1 to 2 year difference so its still gonna have problems.

Yeah really look into the car though, and mostly get it from a dealer. We bought are corolla from a mechanic and he didn't have time to look at it before we bought it or something like that but... long story short we've putt in make about 2k fixing it. The sturts were pretty much all shot, the mechanics think the guy that had it went over a curb going very fast. And because of how messed up the struts were my tires were extremely worn and we had to get four new tires. And we brought it in to get new brakes, and the back drums were pretty much gone... so yeah, really know everything about that car when you get it used. Not to mention my horn doesn't work.

Auto or stick? IS300's have an issue with the gears getting really hard to go in in cooler weather and when the car has been sitting for a day or so until it warms up.

Check this site out if you have not done so already:

    http://my.is/

Lots of good info. I was also going to get the IS300 used, but after looking at how small it is (comparable to 98' Corolla), RWD in the northeast is not a good combination, and the 5 speed transmission problem (plus the lexus mechanics are not to well informed on the tranny since most are autos) I just went another way.

    Good luck!

its probably gonna be auto, and most that i have found are still under lexus warranty. The auto has a manual shifting option and paddle shifting on the steering wheel anyway so doesn't matter to me.

My friend has an IS and that thing is amazing, he has 65k on it and it drives like its new, we even ran seafoam through it and it barely smoked lol. He bought it used also. Only problems he had was he kept blowing tires on that thing. But after an alighnment and new tires he's fine.

I visit my.is all the time, some people have alot of good deals on there cars but i'd be afraid of buying it from someone from a forum cause most people beat on them

Only thing that is bad is the 90k service cost about 1-2k mostly cause alot of stuff gets replaced the timing belt and all this other stuff, so i figure i'd get the car wit like 40-50k on it and around 70k do all the stuff one by one slowly

Gas mileage sucks on it though he gets like 18-20 in city tops and like 25 on highway. The gearing on that thing is odd. At like 65-70mph he does like almost 3,000k on the tach.

As for the winter, i was planning to run blizzaks on that thing, he ran it as well and had no problems

Well im pretty sure the IS uses the W-58 Tranny. The same POS from the NA Supra's. 2 well known things about that tranny are that the gearing sucks and that they're known to die, especially 3rd gear. And yeah, the 2J gets shitty gas milage for the power it makes, but at least you've got potential there, despite the fact that unfortunately, its a VVTI motor.

my friend hasn't had any trouble with the auto tranny, which i presume is the w-58 tranny ur talking about, he beats on it as well

Edit: Just looked it up and the IS300 uses the W-55 transmission

My brother was on the look out for a manual IS300. It's nearly impossible to find one even with 50k for under 20 grand.
