    Chernobyl

    http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/ki.../chapter1.html

This is the story and photographic record of a woman who motorcycled through the Chernobyl area to record the aftermath of the disaster. Talk about your post-apocalyptic world. Fascinating photoessay...the recovery of the wildlife and forest is amazing.

The BBC has a nice photoessay, as well, on these links:

Epidemic outbreaks of thyroid cancer, right? What else are the effects you've come across in your research?

Some of the people who had it the worst were the emergency workers who had to take care of the scene. Some of them died within an hour or so of being there.

I've seen the site with the woman who rode a bike into the town... It was one of the most interesting things I've ever seen. I could only imagine what things mustive been like 20 years ago.

yea huge amounts of thryoid cancer and a large number of birth defects. Like babies with extra limbs, missing limbs, elephantitus type stuff.
You should see pictures of the town just outside of chernobyl its still the same today as it was the day after the explosion. like a modern day ghost town its really creepy looking.

and as far as communism i dont think many of us are cold war babies. The fall of the soviet union seems like so long ago. Almost 15 years now. China has just come out with a new 3 year plan which is proposed to get ride of a lot of their hunger issues.

there are people living just miles away who have been told time and time again to move but refuse. Most are really old now 70's and 80's and they refuse to believe that anything has happened to them, since the soviets origionally denied the severity of what happened. And at this point it wouldnt make a difference whether they moved or not.

In the schools they do tests each year on the children to test their cesium levels. One child who read really high was asked about his habbits and they eventually stumbled across the fact that he made his own berry jam from a tree that was near his house and they asked him to go get the jam to be examined and upon testing it, it was found the the jam was 60% cesium based. And this was just outside Borispol which is just east of kyiv.
