    How many metal-heads here?

...and not this junk some of you call hard-rock / metal.

Face it folks...AFI and Franz Ferdinand is not hard-rock.

When I say metal...I'm speaking in terms of Metallica being tame. (Don't get me wrong, they are my favorite band of all time...but they are pretty tame.)

Just to name a few...this grouping could include:

    Pantera
Devil Driver (One of my faves)
    Dimmu Borgir
    Slayer
    Black Label Society
    Old Man's Child
    Behemoth

    Etc.

Although it's not my favorite music, I've been know to headbang to Slayer's Raining Blood or Megadeth's Hangar 18. You could consider Korn metal, cuz they're what's called "nu metal." I currently have "Word Up" stuck in my head. But I'm not really into the grunting noises that Davis makes. Ever heard of Crotchduster? If you like metal, you'd find them ****ing HILARIOUS! They're lyrics are extremely crude and explicit, though, but I'm young so I'm into that sort of thing ;)

    DON'T OPEN IF AT WORK:
linky for Crotchduster: http://www.crotchduster.com/ Go to the "History" thing first, or else you will have no clue what is going on

hard rock is an umbrella term to describe the way the song is set up, for example, it has an intro, then verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, chorus, ending. metal is a more specific term, it has a more aggressive style w/ distorted guitars and whatnot

I used to listen to Korn (before they came out), A hard-to-find band called Cynic, and a band called Death. :)

That was as hard as I got. Now I'm DMB all the way.

Ehh, Not really. That is not what Hard Rock was. It was a style just like Metal is a style. Now there are so many variations in either that you could even say these are generalized and split into sub-categories.

    gimmick,
What you are referring to is the structure of a song, any song whether it be Jazz, Rock, Reggae, or anything else. Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Bridge, are terms to describe the sections of a song that make up the form.

    E, I agree.

The actual "Hard" in Hard Rock is what is associated with Distortion in guitars, and when it came out had an aggressive style also. Metal has it too.

The biggest, most common differences between Hard Rock and Metal are that Hard Rock normally clings on for dear life to a 4/4, or common time signature. It can vary to a 6/8 feel, or even a 6/4 feel, but those are rare.

Metal, offentimes gets off on funky time signatures like 7/8, 9/8 and others. They also utilize more modes than Hard Rock Plays in, such as Locrian(off of the 7th I believe), and Aeolian.

Another difference, is that Metal tends to focus on more of a Melodic viewpoint with running lines and displays a level of technical difficulty that showcases individuals while making music, as opposed to Hard Rock's straight beats, chord tones that focus on the song as an entire package rather than the chops of the players.

ha, i listen to metal. and pretty much anything with sick breakdowns. :D

some of my favorites are from autumn to ashes, through the eyes of the dead, the black dahlia murder, as hope dies, unearth, rifles at recess, darkest hour, as blood runs black, the bled, the number twelve looks like you and chiodos.

since there are many bands in the same gengre, the list goes on, but you can get a good feel of what i mostly listen to. most of those bands, if not all, have myspaces so you should check them out if you've never heard them!

i really love music, especially metal, and i hate it when people don't give it a chance because of the vocals! but, it's their loss.

    stay metal \m/

Anyone heard of El Nino? Most, if not all their stuff is in Spanish, I thought it was pretty funny hearing metal mixed with screaming Spanish vocals.
