    Laptop Problem

Aight, I have an eMachines laptop that has been trouble free for.....hmm..at least 2.5 years now.
Over the last few weeks though, it will just shut down all on its own. The fan will get noisy, and it will shut off.

If I power it back up, sometimes it will start to power up, then just shut down again.
Other times it will go to my desktop, but none of icons on the toolbar pop up, and you know that it will shut down again before you can do anything. If ya wait a few minutes, power it back up, it will be ready to go with no problems very quickly, and it wont shut down for a long while.

Sometimes it feels very hot on the bottom, as if its shutting down to protect itself, but other times it will shut down after being on for only a few minutes. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Well I thought at first maybe the processor was getting over-heated, but that wouldn't explain the shutdown after restart...unless it still has not reached the optimum runnin temperature yet, and still needs to cool down?

Sometimes Ill let it sit for an hour, and it will still shut down after I turn it on.
Sometimes it will come up and give me the option of safe mode, or reset to the last known acceptable settings, and at that point, it will start up again.

Im so tempted to just get another laptop at this point....or totally restart with this one. A total restore. If I can find all the discs and what not.

Could be a bad/worn out battery?

This only happens when Im on AC power....forgot to mention that.

It will run fine, active, all day long. Then the fan will start to sound louder, and ya know its gonna shut down very soon. Its annoying if youre in the middle of something.

I had an old toshiba laptop die this way like 5 years ago. It had fried a capacitor on the motherboard that controlled voltage to the processor & other parts of the system. in short.. after about 200 crashes it fried the bios rom, end of story.

get canned air, and blast the hell out of it. it sounds like it's got a thermal issue.

barring that, have someone pull it apart(if you're not comfortable doing it), and check the processor for the thermal grease that should be there. that behavior was typical of my Dell, and it turned out to be a lack of grease on the processor(the grease was all over the mobo, instead).

I have the service plan that will cover basically anything, so I guess its worth a shot to take it in there if the above stuff doesnt work.

Ive backed up the vital stuff that I would want to keep in case it took a major shit...pics, videos, some programs, etc

i had a similar problem, but since mine was out of warranty already i took it apart and blasted the main cpu fan/heatsink interface. there was a layer of dust at least 1/16" sitting in between the fan and heatsink blocking most of the airflow. took care of it right away.
