    Tundra Goes Down

    :censored: :rant2:

So it finally happened...after 2.5 years and nearly 65,000 miles...the Tundra has gotten it's first tow and is down until probably Wednesday...maybe thursday...

Coming off of I-70 onto I-25 today we had a little mishap. I was following a van...

This van did NOT run it over...it also did not swerve to avoid it...so obviously whatever the **** I hit came from this van. Saw it...glance to the right...crash wall...ok can't go that way...glance to the left...truck...ok...

    Choices:
    Accident.
    Accident.
Take my chances with the sh!t in the road.

I choose to take my chances. About 100 yards up the highway a real nice guy in a Dodge Ram signals for me to pull over. I pulled over and he says,

"Whatever you ran over put a hole in your gas tank, you're losing fuel all over the place?"
Me: Are you ******* serious? *open my door and look underneath...gas is just POURING out of my tank. "Thanks man gotta go!"
Haul *** up the hill to the exit off the highway. The 15 seconds I was stopped at the light drained 1/4 of a tank of gas...Watched it fall...finally got to a spot where I could stop and shut the truck off...hopped out and watched the last few drips fall out of the hole in the tank.

    Me: FFFFFF*******************KKKKKKKKK!!!
Call up my dad for suggestions...
"Well, let me see if I can find some patching material, how big is the hole?"
I slide down there and manage to put two fingers into the gash with some room left.

Fastforward to the fact that the tow company has been called at 2:30. "We'll be there in half an hour to 45 minutes." 3:15.........3:30....I call my dad, "Where the **** is the tow truck?" (Keep in mind that it is about -4 degrees outside and all the heat is now thoroughly gone from inside the truck. Fastforward again...We tow the thing to my dad's house. I manage to get together Vortex, 7MGTTEConcept, Denver Rolla, as well as my buddy Orlando, his cousin and Vortex's neighbor...We pushed that bastard out of the street into the garage.

I'll post a picture up as soon as I can...but needless to say I have already placed the order for a new gas tank. Whatever the **** I hit destroyed the plastic dust cover over the tank and put about an 6 inch by 4 inch...CANYON, into my 26.4 gallon gas tank.

      :( :( :(   :( :( :(

ouch, that really sucks.. new gas tanks are expensive.

It must have been punctured by something really sharp to go through the scrape cover

I really want to install a bigger tank in my rolla. 13.1 gallons really isn't enough. I'd like to be able to have 20 gallons, but after looking under the car, that doesn't really look possible.

It's kind of a wash for him. With a $500 deductable, it sorta makes no sense to do it.

Option 1: Use insurance, cost of replacement tank is $600 through dealership plus about 2-300 for installation. (or so they quoted him) so with a $500 deductable, thats 3-400 out of pocket. Following this the insurance now goes up a few bucks a month costing maybe a couple more hundred in the long run.

Option 2: Just eat the cost of the tank and order it direct. Cost of tank shipped: $425 (ish) Then install it ourselves. Cost of labor: $0 (ok, $30 for beer) Following that the insurance doesnt go up any and he spent less overall.

Tank has been ordered...should be here Wednesday.

I do believe the tank comes with a spray-on coating to help prevent rust...the thing I'm not sure of is whether or not it comes with another plastic cover...whatever I hit split the plastic cover and punched right through the tank. Aggravating.

Oh I guarantee that I'll be building a solid steel skid plate to keep this from EVER happening again. I'll be able to drag my gas tank over a line of rocks, metal and various other **** and nothing will happen. This officially sucks. I've broken down before...I had the ECU fry on my Firebird one day...I've had all my cars in the shop before for wierd stuff...but punching a 3 inch diameter hole in the tank takes the cake. Soon as I get it out tomorrow I'll take a pic.
