    rattle in '01 1zzfe AT

I just started having a weird problem. My engine rattles at the top of each gear just before the engine shifts. It's a 2001 Toyota Corolla LE AT. It will rattle regardless if I am giving it a lot or a little gas. Also, downshifting for speed reduction also invokes the rattle. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Matthew

my guess would be cracked/worn engine or tranny mounts.

What kind of rattle, and can you tell where it's coming from?

posted on TR...will copy response here...

"My 00 rolla had something simliar to that. I would be at a certain speed and it would sound like rocks in a tin can. I took it in to the dealership and they said some belt had to be replaced along with some tensioner or something. its been a while so I can't remember. Cost me almost 800.00 to get repaired.

Knocking is knocking..its like someone knocking on ur door but real fast/slow. You'd be able to tell the difference if u heard it."

Oh and if I were to have someone press the gas, the noise would come from the passanger side of the engine.

Well, per the dealer, it's just the tensioner on the timing chain.. $110 to replace woot! also time for my 60k service anyway. I will never go to a Firestone again. The 'service manager' argued with me for about 30 minutes, insisting that Toyota techs don't know anything about toyotas. I told him per toyota the chain should last the lifetime of the car, with routine inspections. he claimed they needed to be replaced every 60k miles!!! i was like wtf?? what a quack... anyway, the dealer is actually cheaper than firestone for everything, oil changes, 60k service, etc. so off to the dealer with me :)

    anyway,

    thanks for the help guys

in mine it sounds in the driver side of the car, kinda like a :klink: sound when I push the engine a bit hard

my mounts are also fux00red, but nobody has been so kind of naming the engine/tranny mount beneath the air box filter

but aside that, that's the mayor problems of my engine bay

He must be thinking of timing BELTS. Those won't last as long as the chain. And you'll need to replace those every 60k miles.
