    Accerleration

    I raced a eclipse that had just got an exhaust system and I could keep up with him but he killed me in the start I cought up to him and was like car link away from him. My question is what can I do for better acceleration? I have a stock 1998 toyota corolla with a automatic tranny it has 35,000 miles on the motor so it is reliable

    The fact you were able to keep up with an Eclipse at all in a 1998 stock Corolla is pretty impressive.

    heh, more than likely he got you in the start due to all wheel drive... even with lots of mods an AWD launch will still take you off the line. the only thing to combat it in the overall race is if you've got enough power to overtake him once the race has begun.

    If it would have been an AWD Eclipse, it means it would have been a Turbo, and no way an Automatic 98 Corolla (im assuming his is stock, or near) would have even been close to keeping up... do you know what generation Eclipse it was?

    I agree, no way would a stock 98 auto keep up with an AWD Turbo Eclipse. So me thinks it was an older eclipse that was FWD and non turbo.

    So in that case it would be a 2nd gen. Eclipse with the 2.0 I4 with 140hp/130ft-lbs engine... so either it was an automatic Eclipse, the guy could really not drive, or you have a real peppy automatic Corolla :)

    The '98 Corolla is much lighter and has only slightly less power than a 2g FWD non-turbo Eclipse so I would think that it is possible for the Corolla to keep pace with the Eclipse.

    1998 Toyota Corolla VE - 120hp -- 2414 lbs -- 20.12 lbs/hp
    1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS - 140hp -- 2754 lbs -- 19.67 lbs/hp

    So yeah, they are very close in power/weight ratio, with a slight edge to the Eclipse... so it would really come down to the gearing of the transmission (both automatics in this case) and the condition of the engines (high mileage, abused engine or low mielage, babied engine, etc.)

    So that's why I wooped one of those...dang man my 93 accord kicked one of these things in the pants...on the feeder road and then on the interstate...I've been generally unimpressed by the n/a eclipse...mine's a 5speed and so was this other guys, we both had exhaust, who knows what intake crap he had...mine's pretty much stock...opened it up a little but not much...same year model as listed here...
    he was racing a buddy of mine so I figured I'de join in...didn't expect to woop him

    What about the GS? I was under the impression that was also a non-turbo. I thought only the GST and the GSX were turbo'd.

    i alwats thought it went like this:

    rs=poor mans eclipse
    gs=poor mans eclipse w/ leather
    gst= add a turbo and spoiler to the above
    gsx= add awd to the above

    Buy a race engine from Monkeywrenchracing, send it to the Doc and have him turbo it, send your tranny to Level10 and take a driving class. :D
