really? are you for rea? i really doubt it. the transmissions match up on the 93-97 with the swap and you can gain 160 hp from intake and exhaust mods + ECU tuning from the 1zzfe

The tranny in the '98 and up is the same, it's just the bellhousing that's different. Just use the tranny that comes with the 4AGE and it would probably bolt in. 160hp from intake, exhaust, and ecu on a 1ZZ??? Maybe on the '03 and up, but not on a '98!

I didn't have ECU tuning, but I had i/e & clutch/fw..only pulled a high 15 quarter. I doubt ECU tuning would've given me that much more power...with 160hp, I would have had a solid 15-second car, rather than a 'well, I did it once..".. :p

I may get yelled at for this, but I still cant see the point in doing all of this work on these corollas, as well as putting all this money into them to only bring you 160hp, when in this day and age 80% of the cars out there come with over 200hp from the factory. If this was happening in the mid 90s it would be one thing, but new cars are coming out with mega power/tourque, and even after all this money goes into them, these corollas will still get their ass handed to them on the road.

Hahahaha... right before I scrolled down, I thought "somebody is going to say something about a passat". VERY NEXT POST! haha.

At least the Passat has a turbo from the factory though.

Well, that passat starts out at 180, and a 400 dollar chip adds 100 ft tourque and 60 hp....

    400 bucks into a corolla....will give you.....?

indeed... one thing i've had serious respect for is the european ability to increase performance for relatively cheap. it truly goes to show how much true engineering went into motors produced there and how much they detune them to make them more economical, etc. they have the mentality of ' lets make a 240hp motor and we'll kick it down to 180hp to market it, then we'll offer an upgrade to the ecu which can kick it up to 240hp if someone so wishes ' --- the true sign it was engineered very well is the obvious gain in the the torque. very impressive.

And the fact that internals will hold true at up to the mid 300s before having to be upgraded.

I'd take a Corolla over a peice of crap Passat any day. I wouldn't own one if someone gave it to me. They SUCK.

Don't believe me, just read consumer reports sometime. I don't think that VW, or any European car maker even made ONE car that made on the top 10 list this year.

Well, thats nice of you. Ill refrain from stooping down to your level, this time, and keep my thoughts to myself because you may once again let the mod powers go to your head.
But in regards to the top 10 lists, it took me 30 seconds to find this:
Top ten safest cars on the road: The top 10 follow:

    Large Cars

Gold: Ford Five Hundred/Mercury Montego (Twin vehicles)

    Silver: Audi A6

    Midsized cars

    Gold: Saab 9-3

    Gold: Subaru Legacy

    Silver: Audi A3

    Silver: Audi A4

Silver: Chevrolet Malibu with optional side airbags

    Silver: Volkswagen Jetta

    Silver: Volkswagen Passat

    Small car

    Gold: Honda Civic 4-door

    Minivans

    No winners

Or how about the top ten luxury cars under 45k?
    1. BMW 3 Series
    2. Audi A4
    3. BMW 5 series
    4. Audi A6
    5. Infiniti G35
    6. MB CLK
    7. BMW Z4
    8. Saab 9-5
    9. VW Toureg
    10. Infinit XF45

To Throw out a remark like that shows how ignorant you are.
Im not so naive that Im not away that there are a lot of European cars that have been rated as the most reliable, some of the VW models included. Coilpacks were a huge issue in 2004 that led the Jettas and some Gtis to make those lists....Toureg made the list in its first year as well. Youll fail to find the Passat on any of those lists.

And all in all, I fail to see how reliability falls into this entire conversation. We're talking about power numbers and the modding ability, DOC

WHAT consumer reports did this come from????? i did a search myself and found something MUCH more accurate...

first tried consumer reports (.org) website, but you need to be a member.... so i looked, and found the results on CNN's website, and this is what Consumer Reports rated things:

    Best predicted reliability:

    (As calculated by Consumer Reports)

    Small cars:

    Toyota Echo

    Honda Civic (2005)

    Toyota Prius

    Honda Civic Hybrid (2005)

    Toyota Corolla

    Subaru Impreza (non-turbo)

    Sporty cars/Convertibles Coupes

    Honda S2000

    Mazda MX-5 Miata (2005)

    Lexus SC430

    Chevrolet Monte Carlo (2005)

    Sedans

    Lexus GS300/GS430*

    Infiniti M35/M45*

    Lexus IS300 (2005)

    Honda Accord Hybrid*

    Toyota Camry

    Honda Accord 4-cyl.

    Lexus LS430

    Wagons

    Toyota Matrix

    Minivans

    (None rated "Best")

    Small SUVs

    Toyota Rav4 (2005)

    Honda CR-V

    Honda Element

    Subaru Forester

    Mercury Mariner*

    Mitsubishi Outlander

    Mid-sized SUVs

    Lexus RX400h (hybrid)*

    Toyota Highlander

    Toyota 4Runner (V-8)

    Infiniti FX35

    Large SUVs

    Toyota Land Cruiser

    Pick-up trucks

    Honda Ridgeline*

    Toyota Tundra

Interestingly enough... there isn't a SINGLE european car on there... be a VW/Audi, BMW, or mercedes......

and i can sure as hell tell you there are way more people coming into my work that have major/expensive problems with their VW's than i have customers who have imports (excluding anything korean made).

also... for your other comment...... let me ask you this..... if the goal is 'whoever gets their car up to 30mph first has the better car' then why the hell are you in a passat? an 88/89 mr2 s/c auto would easily take the win on that one.... (when they came out they were THE fastest production car from 0-30mph... including exotics)

my point? just because you were able to make power by using a chip (which for those that don't know, just changes fuel settings and allows boost to get higher...... you can get much better numbers if you were driving say, a turbo diesel ford/dodge/chevy truck) and that your heavy passat came with 180hp from the factory doesn't mean it's by ANY means superior. What you do to your car and what car you choose really depends on what you want to/with the car.
