it's his money...i don't care, as long as he saves money as well. besides...he's on the road, and can use it as a deduction come tax time NEXT year. since he practically lives on the road for work, it's considered an entertainment expense. ;)

heh...with what...the expense, or the deduction?

the latter is easy: get a job that requires you to be on the road more than 75% of the year.

Must depend on your regio, and the structures your driving around. I drive 60 miles one way to work, and it only cuts out once, for about 1 second, while driving under one of the bridges I drive under.

XM is the market leader and i heard recently that because of stern coming on sirius, sirius beat out xm in sales over the last month cause of stern, this was the first time they beat them, or so i heard.

anyway, i have sirius in my corolla, i like it a lot. :)

What you heard was wrong. Xm still surpasses the yearly new subscribers than Stern, and to think that all of the new subscribers to Sirius are there because of Stern is ridiculous.

    Both are good products...

something to note on sirius, most of the subscriber increase is due to promotions and additions due to deals with car companies and such. something to keep in mind about the promotions are most of them are *NOT* making Sirius any amount of money worth noting. I'm speaking of the promotions such as ' free year of sirius with a purchase of a sirius equipped car ' and Sirius' addition of users through dish network subscribers. those are just two examples - but two of the major ones. As a stock holder in both companies I follow very closely how they are marketing and how much money they are truly making in comparison to the amount of subscribers they are taking on. I personally (for my own financial sake) hope both companies thrive and do well, however XM has a MUCH better hold on the market than Sirius does and currently shows the most promise for the future from a stability point of view. If Sirius doesnt get in gear, its possible we'll see them in serious (no pun) trouble over the next few years. Either way, it'll be fun to see how it all pans out. :)

XM is coming out with some new technology that will put them over Sirius even more so than they are now. Sirius is seriously lacking in their technology.

It's actually been announced already. XM will come out with a couple of new portable players following their popular XM MyFi. Like the newly released Sirius S50, the new XM Inno (Pioneer) & Helix (Samsung) will also have the ability to play MP3's. However UNLIKE the Sirius S50 (which can only get satellite reception when docked), the XM products WILL be able to recieve LIVE satellite radio while on the go.
Additionally, XM has partnered up with Napster so that you can buy songs you hear as well. Lets say you're walking down the street, you hear a song you like playing on your Helix. You can press the 'buy it' button & the next time you dock with your computer, you will DL the song from Napster onto your computer & player. Sirius is nowhere near this capability.

Also, despite what you might have read about Sirius offering satellite video, XM will be the first to get it out. XM already markets XM Nav (which is GPS as well as live traffic monitoring), and a weather app for planes & weather buffs.

More interestingly, announced at CES last week (esp for music buffs like me)....

    Quote:
Las Vegas — At least four home audio companies will support the launch of XM Satellite Radio’s planned surround channels in the coming months with A/V receivers that incorporate Neural Surround decoders to deliver the channels in discrete 5.1-channel surround.

Select analog and digital FM stations have also begun limited 5.1-channel broadcasting using the technology, created by Kirkland, Wash.-based Neural Audio.

The quartet of suppliers planning Neural-decoding XM-ready receivers are Denon, Pioneer, Onkyo and Yamaha, with Pioneer planning March deliveries of the $299-suggested retail XM-ready VSX-816-K/-S that it is demonstrating. Neural executives said the other three companies would also deliver A/V receivers in the same time frame to support XM’s plans in March to begin 5.1-channel broadcasting 24/7 on two channels and to offer a variety of special shows and live performances in the stereo-compatible format. Neural said the receivers would be priced from $299 to around $2,000. Neural also said Pioneer plans to offer Neural decoding in OEM and after-market car radios at a later date.

For its part, Yamaha confirmed plans to offer Neural in 2006 and plans announcements in February or March.

Yamaha’s receivers, like the others, would decode Neural broadcasts from select terrestrial FM stations, including affiliates of NPR, which has recorded and broadcast events in 5.1. Select Clear Channel stations have also broadcast in Neural Surround, Neural said.

Neural stressed that its technology provides fully discrete full-range channels, and it expects widespread adoption in the home and car, given that the Neural algorithm can be loaded on the same DSPs that incorporate Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 decoding, said Neural chairman Paul Hubert. Neural’s required MIPs (millions of instructions per second) are only slightly greater than Dolby Pro Logic’s, he said. Neural works in all new audio DSPs from such companies as Freescale, TI and Analog Devices.

    Neural Surround works like this:

In the two-channel mix-down of 5.1-channel source material, Neural embeds a continuous watermark in the audio waveform without affecting the sound quality of the two-channel broadcast, Hubert said. The watermark is up-mixed by the Neural decoder.

The watermark can also be decoded by existing 5.1 matrix-surround Dolby Pro Logic II and Circle Surround II decoders, but a Neural decoder delivers better separation and stability, Hubert claimed. As an example of stability, he said the location of a voice won’t be pulled toward the channel with the dominant music passage.

Neural decoders also up-mix any two-channel material, including CDs, to 5.1 channels, although the best effects are delivered when an encoded program is decoded.

    VERY cool.

it's a matter of taste actually ... depends on what programming you're seeking. From a technology stance, XM is FAR exceeding Sirius in their offering at the current time. I'm sure Sirius will answer to the call and come out with their own matches to the new releases for XM but XM is still the industry leader. Remember I own stock in both companies so I'll support them both, however right now, XM still has the market, the technology and ther support hands down.

what does the satelite radio stock go for now-a-days? Sounds like you made a good investment. I'm probably getting sirius soon, solely based on the fact that H.Stern is on it.

Depends on what you want... Sirius (SIRI) closed today at 6.20/share and XM Radio (XMSR) closed at 28.99/share
