buying a car from a rental good?

ok, my friend saw a 2004 nissan sentra at enterprise for $11xxx... it has 30xxx miles on it... all power and shit... looks descent on the outside... i havent seen the inside yet... she told me that when she test drove it it ran pretty good... sounds like a good deal right? its pretty brand new... just a year old...

    but....

why would they sell the car instead of rent it if it runs good?

    good buy or not?

They tend to replace the cars after so many miles... its prettym uch a set guideline, has to do with possible maintenance (bigger maintenance at certain intervals) after a certain mileage point and possible repairs after a certain mileage point

we sell ex-rental units every day at my lot... they ae perfictaly fine they check over them with a fine tooth comb the only problem I have with them is that the don't come with a warenty... fleet cars loose their warnety as soon as they are sold to the company that bought them

    No

I beat the rental cars to hell. One time I spun a dodge neon out into a cornfield, and another dodge neon i was renting I jumped it off a hill and got all four wheels off the ground

When I rent a car I drive it like I stole it, slam shifting, burning up the clutch, sliding, burnouts. Whatever :) Renting a car is like getting a ticket to be crazy as shit and not have to worry, within reason of course :)

My parents bought a dodge Stratus from Enterprise and it ran really well. They also got a nice discount on it, because it was a rental.

Like any other car, you might buy a rental that was almost never pushed or you might be unlucky and get one that was abused all its life... it could be a good buy, but definitely get it checked out by an independent mechanic before buying...

I know a few people that have personally bought from Enterprise and so far, things have worked out for them. It is very true that rentals get $hit driven out of them - I do it as well. Get the extra coverage for a few extra bucks and then go ape. But it should also be noted that they also get regular maintenance done on them on a consistent basis - they don't skimp on getting work done.

Personally, I never found myself wanting to buy a car so badly, that I needed to get it from a rental agency. You could get the same price or sometimes better at a regular dealership or private party sale. Doesn't mean that cars here are driven conservatively - I've seen used cars are some dealerships that a bit "rough". Big difference is if you can get the history of the car and all service done to it from beginning of service. From a used car lot - probably next to nil getting that kind of info, but from a rental agency - they can probably print up a copy on the spot.

When you buy a car - there is always some risk associated with the purchase (repair, reliability wise) - that is why you have to do the research. Your friend should definitely check all her options before buying any car.
