After three years of marriage and months of speculation, Newlyweds Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson are breaking up.

"We have decided to part ways," the couple said in a joint statement issued Wednesday evening.

"This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other.

"We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."

The announcement comes nearly one month after their Oct. 26 wedding anniversary.

In its Oct. 17 issue, Us Weekly featured a cover story announcing the couple had split. They denied it.

Simpson told the December/January issue of Teen People that "hopefully mine and Nick's story will continue for the rest of our lives, through sickness and in health."

In the Oct. 10 issue of OK!, Simpson said, "Yes, we're married and we love each other. ... I don't need diamonds on my finger to show that I love my husband."

Simpson, 25, was an erratically successful solo star and Lachey, 32, was lead singer for boy band 98 Degrees when they shot to fame in 2003 with the MTV series, Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica.

The show, in which Simpson famously professed that she remained a virgin until her wedding night, candidly followed the couple's bumpy foray into marriage and made Simpson famous for her ditzy malapropisms. Simpson starred as Daisy Duke in this summer's The Dukes of Hazzard.

Well she had to make that statment. Its only going to be a matter of time before the press starts seeing her and I together. We've done a great job of hiding it thus far though. [snicker]

I want to burn all of those celebrity magazines. I can't believe people waste their time with that. The same thing could be said about RPG players. But there is at least a higher level of social interaction that isn't based on gossip. Gossip is the opposite of Gospel. These people are going against the teachings of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. They will burn in hell for their idolatry and worship of celebrities.
