    advices needed

Recently i went to Newark airport, there was a Hess gas station going northboung before arriving at the gas station. I got gas there and they made a gigantic mistake....

The nozzle didnt stop pumping after my tank was full. so the gas came out everywhere, the floor, on the car, on the tire, my shoes.... so I am wondering what damage could have it done to the car, like pumped too much gas into the tank, damage to the paint job, or make the tire deterioate faster....

Also there was no way to know how much gas exactly spilled.... I had about 1/2 tank and drove 182 miles since last fill up... i am estimating i had at least 6-7 gallons left... and that would be like 5 gallons spilling out.

so i am wondering what kinds things i can do to have them compensate for it financially, or if there was damage resulting from the spill. Can i get them to pay to fix it... for example if the paint start to fall apart..

should I notify my insurance company?would they increase the premium if they had to deal with it?

so I need any advice i can get... thanks guys

I wouldn't worry about it. Clean it up and move on. I've spilt gasoline on my car plenty of time from the tank overflowing and it hasn't rusted out yet.

And if you contact your insurance and get them to cover a couple hunded dollars of "damage", they'll just count it against you and raise your premium a few thousand.

just make sure that you clean it off with soap and water... the gas will eat away at the clear coat if left one there..

It is clearly posted that you shouldnt leave the nozzle. All liability will fall on you.
Are you saying that it was still in your hand and the gas kept pouring out, even after it clicked off?

Ah yeah, this is NJ.....so how did it get all over your shoes?

the reason the gas got on my shoes was because the spill was so much it create a puddle next to the drive side front door.

In NJ, we dont pump the gas ourselves, it's the attendent's job....

it looks like from what you guys said there wont be much damage if i clean it and wax it..

    thanks

Some 8th generation Corollas (1998-2002) got a bad reputation of getting the vapor canister (Charcoal canister - part of the EVAP system) flooded with liquid gas if you tend to top off the tank all the time. Was a design issue that was fixed in the following generation Corolla/Matrix. Even overfilling the tank a little bit caused problems. If the canister is flooded by liquid gasoline - it would render it useless and it would have to be replaced. Not a cheap piece - online sells for around $160, dealer + install runs well above $350. Problem generally does not show up right away - might take weeks before a CEL pops up with an EVAP error. Unless it was documented at the scene, you would have to foot the bill.

I thought you couldn't pump your own gas in NJ? It's actually illegal there...

Over here alot of gas stations have full server and self serve pumps, so if its cold and don't mind paying 2 cents more per liter (ends up costing about $1.00 more CAD to fill up with full server vs self server) you can get someone to do it for you, or you can do it yourself and save that 2 cents per liter :) it's great having choices... when that happened, did you talk to the manager of the gas station? It would have been good to document the time, the pump number, the name of the attendant and the manager you spoke too... just in case...
