    Drive-by-wire?

If this has been brought up im sorry, but I was wondering what exactly is it and the disadvantages or advantages? I know the corolla has it I believe.

I believe currently only the XRS trim has it. I am a opponent of drive by wire. IMO the old cable design gives a more connected, percise, and quicker throttle response then a few circuit board and a solenoids. Besides that the drive by wire limits or prevents advance/racing type throttle control such as heel-toe and left foot braking.

I've driven a mazda 6 with drive by wire and I'm not sure what was it but throttle response were really poor and i'm comparing it to my 96 corolla.

xrs I believe is drive by wire...everytime I let off the gas to where it's about 4% throttle...the car bogs...I'd much rather have the old cable driven system....much more accurate....

Must be the design of teh DBW system. I have it and I can't tell the difference between a hard wired system, and the electronic.

Drive by wire does has advantages, for instance for traction control the ECU can take throttle control away from you in a panic situation. Also some cars with the drive by wire have some cool features like "Sport Mode" or "Economy Mode" where the ECU takes control of the trottle and uses your foot position as a maximum but figures out how to get there the best way. Shit like that.

the econ mode and sport mode where on older toyota too. but these are still controlled by the transmission via tranny ecu. like the 1st 2 gen of the lexus gs, ls, sc and the cressida, camry and older corollas

you loose a lot of pedal feel. i've test drove the 05 and compare it to my 04. 05 has a lighter feeling than the 04s

Its just a matter of time before they upgrade it to force feedback also :) So now if you try to push your pedel down and loose traction the pedal will push back ;)

The only disadvantage to DBW is that it puts your car in the same mechanical class as Nitro R/C cars ;)

LOL, like a MOMO racing wheel or something?? :D Dude that would be really cool, but I'd have to be able to turn it off.

Yeah full force feedback would be the shit, think about you. You could change how the steering wheel felt just like when you play force feedback video games, more force or less force, You could enable linear or nonlinear steering so your car steers the same at 100mph or different. Hell lets go for force feedback shifter too. You could have actuators that tention the gears so you could make the car shift like butter or drop into gear like nascar. It would be freaking awesome!

Someone is been playing too much video games! :D

I thin carmakers would never do this becaus of liability. All they need is some moron suing the comapany because his car steered too fast, or he/she could not hit the next shift since the gears were set too hard and got into an accident. Plus car manufacturers are like restaurants. It is all about consistency between one car and the next, they all have to be almost exactly the same.

To my drive-by-wire feels exactly the same, but it may vary from manufacturer to manufaturer.

I was thinking about that "steer by wire" thing if thats what you are talking about. What would happen if you were steering and then all of a sudden the electronics went kaput..... you would go into the wall lol. I was also thinking of this drive by wire stuff. It almost looks possible that you could hook up the car to be controlled by hand held remote control. Remember back to the future part I in the beginning where he was controlling the car with a remote control. You could probably have solenoids on the brake cylinders to electronically work the brakes.

Check this out, not quite steer by wire but its a start
    http://www.designnews.com/article/CA330639.html

Also the shift by wire is also possible like the Lexus IS300 and many other cars demonstrate by a button that you can push to shift. If you can shift with a button push then its definatly done electronicly which means you could also create a manual stick shift that was adjustable in every way, it would just be expensive. But I still think it would be awesome to have a fully customizable car though. But I bet we will see Ferrari adopt this long before anyone else. We can only wait and see :)

Saabs have that and its so stupid. Sport mode just opens the throttle flap more. There is also a winter mode that limits throttle and starts the car in 3rd gear. Un-necessary if you don't gun the car around in snow.

Whatever happened to using ones brain and foot to decide how economically they would like to drive? Instead theres a computer controlled throttle that "thinks for you." Psssshhhh. An electric throttle is more suspect to fail and more expensive to replace than a manual one. If you need traction control on a 130hp FWD 1ZZFE Corolla, you aren't the greatest driver.- end of rant.

Thank god Toyota has a cable-throttle on the 2ZZGE engine.

Actually one thing I can vouch for Drive-by-wire is that it eliminates the cruise control cable motor. Less is better.

I'm not advocating that drive by wire is good in its present form, I'm saying that it could be the fucking bomb. What do F1 cars use? I'm saying that the drive by wire shit probably has the most potential but we just aren't going to see it in Corolla's and Civic's for a few more years :) Maybe in the higher end sports cars they will implement a more configurable drive by wire system. Hell I went for a ride in a Ferrari 360 Modea and it has a switch you could flip back and forth to change out the suspension charged in corners, it was all electronic, It was pimp!
