The mechanic and the heart surgeon

The mechanic and the heart surgeon
A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the engine of a truck when he spotted a well-known heart surgeon in his shop. The surgeon was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage "Hey doc, can I ask you a question?"

The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the truck. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I get such a small salary and you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing basically the same work?

The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over and whispered to the mechanic, "Try doing it with the engine running."

Mechanics have to learn about new engines every year, but the human body stays the same. I'd definitely argue that a master tech probably knows about as much as a doctor.

It may unbolt differently but the principles of how the stuff works has stayed the same for a very very long time.

I'm going to have to disagree with that. Doctors have new surgeries to learn and technology/medicine gets more complicated all the time.

I don't think you can even begin to compare a human being with a material object. One good example is that with the car if it works it works, if it doesn't, then it doesn't and that is it. You can take it apart and put it back together as many times as you wish, and get a brand new of whateer if you have to.

With humans it is a one shot deal, and there are not "body parts" store to go to if you break something.

I think it is asinine to compare the two professions as being equal in real life. One profession deals with a material commodity, while another one deals with human lives. But if you want your car mechanic to be your doctor as well, then more power to you.

As a medical student, i can say no, i must disagree....from procedures, to technology, to pathogenic mutations, and antibiotic regeneration.......of course a sternocleidomastoid is always gonna be a sternocleidomastoid muscle and the olecranon fossa will always be behind your knee....but considering that we only decoded the entire human genome in the last decade.....that we only started doing stem cell research afterwards....and even now, theres still many unexplored paths that we have yet to discover or take...you'll always use oil to reduce viscosity....give penicillin to just anyone n rupture the wrong cell wall or rupture it too quickly, and the person could die...give the same penicillin thats worked on an infection for years and years and all of a sudden the pathogen is completely resistant to it, what next....

By mom and my sister are both doctors, so I definitely don't doubt the intelligence of MDs, but I think being a mechanic who is on top of emerging technologies takes a special kind of intelligence as well.

Yeah.... Cooter from The Dukes of Hazzard comes to mind as a "special" kind of intelligence. LMAO

Oh by the way, the guy in the joke is not just a doctor, hes a HEART SURGEON, of which I'm SURE take s more than a Bachelor's Degree..... Do you need your PHD, anyone know?

To be a mechanic, you need to be ASE certified, right? (I'm not knocking the job, I'm just comparing)

ANYWAY!!!! It was a joke damn. :)

Hahahah, yeah no freaking way is right :D. Doctors have to deal with the unknown every single time the perform a surgery and they have to act fast and make quick decisions that could save or end a life. When a car if you hit a stump or your missing a part you just toss a rag over it and revisit it. Try doing that with a human on life support :D

Geez everyone is all over this!
Well if it even matters anymore. Medical knowledge is always changing, doctors are always learning new things as well. The human body is...
Ok, well I think everyone else in here said it so I'll just leave it at that.
    :D
