Rear brakes are squeaking, bad shoes?

for the past couple days, everytime i brake, i hear a squeaking sound from the rear of the car, i've found out it's the rear brakes, and i was wondering are the shoes going bad?

actually the sound isn't much of a squeak, but it's the same sound as when you're parked uphill or downhill, and you pull the handbrake up, the car rolls back or forward a couple inches or so, and makes that pulling noise

i have no clue how many miles are on the rear shoes, also, the handbrake has quite a bit of slack when i pull it up all the way and i'm on a hill, it rolls back a good amount

btw, this is a 98 corolla LE

u may need to have the drums resurfaced and have some new brake shoes installed. Also you may need to have the emergency brake adjusted.

If your hand brake has unusual excess slack and it doesn't hold on a hill you're probably due for new rear brakes.

check the brake KIT, too. mine was squeaking recently, so i thought i needed new shoes as well. we took my brakes apart and it turns out the kits were bad, but the shoes were fine. ever since we replaced the kits, the brakes have been fine. one set of shoes had never even touched the drum!

changed the shoes, turned out it was the old shoes being too worn and having slack (i guess)

now they're fine and it's great..
