CD exploded in my drive!!! WTF

Something crazy and insane happened to me today and I thought I would share it with all you. I stuck a CD in my media center pc's DVD drive and I started to walk away when I heard a thump and the sound of shattered bits flying around. I tried to open the drive back up and it was stuck so I turned off the computer and shook the shit out of it. Finally the door opened up and about 10,000 little peaces of CD fell out of the drive. I had to shake the system for like 10 minutes to get all the little bits out of the drive before it would open and close again. Holy shit! Has anyone else ever had this happen? I'm considering ditching this cheap media before anymore go granda on me.

One of the biggest reasons that a CD would explode in your drive is that it was spinning too fast.

CD's will usually "explode" at revolutions in excess of 25,000 RPM. That's only if the CD is perfect. If you had a crack in the CD then it would not take such a high rate of RPM to make the CD shatter.

yea like that episode of mythbusters.

but it'd have to be a serious crack to pop at regular drive speeds, unless somehow yours went into overdrive

I've seen lots of cd explode. It was actually very common when the first 48X 52X cd-rom's came out due to the extreme rotation speed. But, it was only a few months before they developed better materials so that stopped happening. so, maybe you got a defective disk or something
