Valve Cover Polishing

    Im thinking of polishing or painting my valve cover. I grabbed one from the junkyard. Im wondering if it would be ok to polish this one and swap it when im ready, along with a new gasket. Or would it be better to swap them and polish the one that came on my car, and put it back after. TIA

    As long as you get a new gasket with a couple dabs of RTV at the corners you'll be fine. Wouldn't hurt to clean it up though.

    Ok thanks, what should i use to clean the inside of the cover? And will oil leak from the tube that connects to the nipple on the right side of the cover?

    I would use an engine degreaser to clean it all up. And what do you mean will oil leak, are you not planning on connecting all the vacuum lines when you're done? Or do you mean when you take it off your car?

    I should clean the inside the oil cap resevoir aswell?
    Of course i plan on reattaching everything. But i mean if its damaged for whatever reason somewhere doesnt fully seal ? It seems like there was sone oily gunk on one side of it, but it was the best looking one at the yard.

    It you're nervous about the condition of it, don't use it at all. Put a lint-free towel over the cams when you take yours off, paint it, and put it right back on. Just plan a day where you won't drive your car for about 4 or 5 hours.
