    Legalizing an import

I was wondering......lets say u were to import an r34, hypothetically of course....firstly, those retail for like $40-50k US, but cost like an additional $40-50k US to ship to the US (why its so high, i dunno)....it cost an additional $30k US to have someone legalize the engine to meet EPA standards.....

What I wanna kno is this....to meet EPA standards, they strip down the engine and modify or remove the parts from it.....shipping set aside, would u be able to just do a USDM engine swap instead n take care of the issue for much less......also, what about those people who have skyline engine swaps, do they no longer meet US standards?

Motorex have already paid a 3rd party company for the testing and it is very easy to get a Skyline legalized right now for around 10.. Ofcourse Motorex is running a monopoly, so you could probabaly find others who could do it for less. A local guy here legalised a JDM GC8 for 6k

I think the whole importing thing is just such a big business..... the US of course takes advantage of it cause they know import owners are willing to pay anything to get the car in the states.... big monopoly but I guess when it comes to a skyline it's well worth it lol

what about importing those cars from other countries? like australia, the dominican republic or jamaica? i know those countries have the jdm cars straight from japan, right hand drive and all.

at the very least shiping cost would be less.

Eh, i dont think i would pay for an imported GC8...id just take whats here...newayz, yea, i kno bout motorex n what they do n all...

but still the question remains...shipping set aside, would u be able to just do a USDM engine swap instead n take care of the issue for much less......also, what about those people who have skyline engine swaps, do they no longer meet US standards?

mexico is right next door so legalizing a car is just harder in some areas but easier in others. legalizing a USDM vehicle in mexico is very easy.

And if we don't legalize it? I mean, I know a good amount of states do emmisions testing and all, but in FL we don't...how would one know outside of seeing right hand drive and assuming?

i'd imagine it'll be like driving around in a car with expired/no registration or insurance.. thats if the customs even let you take it off the port.

well oklahoma is the same way, no inspections period. But you'll be able to smell the fumes real easily, also they take higher octane fuel....and also, driving around in an r34, you're gonna be a high profile car for the cops, one of those cars you turn n look at more than twice, rhd yes, and i dont think you're gonna be able to put insurance on an imported un"USDM"ed car, but i dunno....if i had an r34, i kno id take it down the cruise spot every saturday, lol...

the customs agents here at the border are so screwed up they get paid on the side by "others" to allow them to transport "shit" back and forth. this year they caught 6 agents lower than the 9 we had last year.
