Well I bought some fish last weekend, a Betta fish, 4 little minnows and a dwarf frog... I got those because the people at the pet shop said the betta fish, frog and minnows co-exist nicely together... well, I got home last night, one of the minnows we're floating in the tank with no head and no flippers... so I guess they we're wrong at the pet shop, so i'll probably be getting rid o the betta fish and buying some more little fishies, does anyone have any recommendations for fish that are colorful and can co-exist happily with minnows?

haha my beta jumped out of my aquarium while i was gone and I never found it's remains. I thought the tetra or the pleco ate it. When I was moving some furniture I found the damn beta, it was all dried and crusty. I wonder how it got out since the lid was closed. in my tank I got a pleco, a catfish, a tetra and an orange fish that I can't remember the name but they seem to live happy.

The only one that seems happy in mine is the dwarf frog, heh, the betta seems like an aggressive anti social bastard and the minnows seem scared since the other fish was killed (they seeemed a little scared before, but now even more, and the betta seems more aggressive...)

I guess betta is either going back to the pet shop, or if i can find someone to take him, or down the toiler... if neither of the first two work out...

To my understanding, bettas shouldn't be mixed with other fish. Bettas get aggressive. and some tetras are fin pickers..so you have to watch out with those.

Yeah dude I agree with the Tetras. :) I had ten at one time in my tank, 2painted, 2bloodfins, a few neon I think, and some others. :) They make for a good lil community.

The Betta is actually called Siamese Fighting Fish (or Betta Splendens, if you want the scientific name)...

I guess it depends on the fish, from what i've been reading online, some will co-exist happily with other fish while others are just aggressive bastards (like mine, heh)...

If I get other fish, i'll either get another aquarium (mine is about 2.5 gallons) and keep the Betta in the 2.5 Gallon tank (with the frog) and have the rest in the other (and probably get another frog or two)...

I'll probably keep whatever minnows I have left, and get a few varieties of tetras...

Oscars are nice! :) I had 2 that were about 2-3 inches big when I got them and I threw 2 plecos into the tank. Soon they grew out of the 20G and I had to get a 75G. They all grew to over 12in big with the exception of one pleco that only grew 10in.

    Thanks!

I was just talking with my gf, and she said at her dad's they might have a 75 or 80 gallon aquarium in storage, that they are obviously not using anymore, so i'll see if I can borrow it for an extended period of time...

my coworker's got 3 GINORMOUS Oscars. they consistently bicker back and forth(can't really call it fighting, since the "fights" last for seconds before they go about their business), and because of their behavior toward anything else in the tank, Joe's removed all plants/stuff from the tank. it's just the 3 oscars and the gravel on the bottom. they end up ripping anything to shreds.

if you got the space and can afford the water bill at the time u have to change the water, then go for it! You won't regret it. only thing that will cost you up front is for a very good filter. I would suggest a canister filter that is made to handle a 120G tank. that way you won't have major issues with dirty water and what not.

thats exactly how mine acted. the 2 Oscars would always fight and "lip lock". one time the one oscar beat the shit out of the other oscar and destroyed its beautiful pattern. eventually that same oscar killed one of the plecos. After a while the wounded Oscar killed the other pleco and eventually killed the Oscar that scared it. then after a while the last Oscar developed HITH and I didn't catch it in time and by then it was too late. It later died cause of it.

But its fun to watch them eat live goldfish. Plus its like exercise for them, it makes them swim more and be a little more active.

ya...they do that "lip lock" thing. it's slightly amusing, especially when Joe's son watches them do it. he(at nearly 2 years of age) sits there and cheers them on.

I don't have to pay for water usage here :) We aren't metered, its just a flat rate every month... yah, i'll know tonight if they still have it or not (she can't remember if the kept it or not) and hopefully they'll let me take it (i'll even bu it depending on the price)... and I guess they had a filter, air pump and abunch of decorations with it, so if that stuff is all still there, i'll just replace the filters and clean everything well...

yea, over sized filter is a must, my 10 gallon has a 20 gallon filter on it and our 29 gallon has a 50-60 gallon filter on it

lucky you! lol. wish my water wasn't metered. either way..good luck with that tank! hopefully they still have it. If you do get it, I would suggest getting the Python cleaning system. You won't regret it if you do get it! And I would suggest Eheim for a canister filter. I heard Fluval isn't that great (some say it is, but the 2 places i went to had advised against it cause parts usually need to be replaced alot sooner then Eheims.) Its like a car...would u get a Kia or a Toyota? lol.

im going to a pet shop up here that i heard has a sale going on since they are renovating and want to get rid of all their stock before closing the store for the renovations... just gotta wait for my gf to get out of university...

Well, I bought a 5.5 Gal Aquarium now... so I have the 2.0~2.5 for the betta fish and dwarf frog... and i'll put the minnows int he 5.5 and probably get a few more, maybe tetras, another frog for that one...
