any way to detect police presence?

i'm not talking about a radar detector or anything like that. is there a good way to determine the locations and distances to cruisers? i was just curious maybe someone who is or was an officer could tell me

*edit* oh i know about scanners. i'm really skeptical of their ability to tell me where and how far a cruiser with a speedtrap is

Im not following what youre asking?

A radar detector will beep when it detects beams....and increase in intensity as you get closer.

Other than that, and a scanner.....not sure what else youd expect there to be

well the dispatcher probably knows the locations of cruisers in real-time through some sort of system that transmits GPS coordinates. I want to intercept their transmissions, plot the coordinates on a real-time map and speed around worry free.

No, most police cars DONT have "lo-jack". Many have the lo-jack detection system, but they themselves dont have em. At least not any agency in Maryland.

    Mission Impossible here...geez...lol

Hack into my local bank too and transfer some money into my account for me while youre at it

how does the dispatcher know where all the cruisers are? just by radio transmissions from the officers?

Well, larger departments have GPS tracking systems within the car, built into their computer system that is linked up through their computer. (MD troopers are equipped with CapWin) Smaller departments rely on verbal location points.

But if you think youre going to be able to hack into the police department computer system, well, dont be surprised when you get a knock at your door by the people youre tracking, lol.

From my understanding they(dispatch) ask their "10-20" (location) and the car would report in with it.

Larger departments with money have top of the line computer systems in their cars, with an online tracking system at dispatch

well i dont want to hack the dispatch computer. that would be dumb. i do, however want to intercept and decrypt their gps coordinates. they are just being transmitted wirelessly and anyone can listen in. you said the system is online based?

    oh lord.

how about you learn to drive safely, and avoid speeding? all speeding does is save you 5 minutes avg travel time, anyway...

personally i have no problems (don't ask why) just drive safely and simply pay attention to your surroundings, i don't have a radar and i could care less if i had one anyway, should i get pulled over, if i get pulled over it for things such as not using turn signal when turning and things like that. i don't do it in front of other cars but every once in a while................

They used to make something called a "Bear Tracker" - basically a scanner than picked up on the usual police bands and measured the power of the police transmitter in relation to your location. Closer they got, the stronger the signal - but it could not pinpoint direction.

As for GPS - actually easy to pickup and decode the signal - hard part is finding out which string is valid to your query. The only thing is that most streams will tell you nothing by themselves (the ones that are more descriptive are sent over hardlines (bandwidth issue and security)). The rest of the information is encryted (wireless keys, VPN, etc) and/or uses non-standard protocols. You could get the information but you will end up hacking into one of their servers to get any useable information.

Better to use your own two eyes and observer traffic behavior around you - or not to do anything to bring attention to you (speeding, racing, etc. - ie. don't do anything you don't want to get caught for).

you could build a poliece radio scanner in to your car... F&TF style... actually I was planning on doing that my self untill I relized I would never be able to listen to music wile I was scanning and if I ever got searched I do beleave its illegal in colorado... and the antenna on my trunk would just suck...

Bingo, and if you feel you must speed, look down at your speedometer...10-1 you are already speeding if you are following the pace of traffic.
Speeding is over-rated. I'm not sure about other states, but cops around here tend to sit in plain view, right on a side street, or near a street sign.

    igorien2k-

You should drive around at night wearing night vision and with your headlights off. That way you will be nearly invisible to cops, as well as other motorists!
