man, its coming directly towards houston.i dont know if i should be scared or not. i went to the store today, and every ones buying water like crazy. every store is out of water, and the lines were backed up to the aisles.
it'll be hitting galveston on friday/saturday, and the city of houston can expect winds up to 100 miles per hour. it'll probably knock out powerlines. gay, i wont have internet for the weekend

Yea, that sucks. Ive been to Houston, Port Lavaca, Galveston, Freeport, Port Aransas, and Chorpus Christi...all of which are basically coastal cities, even Houston with the Port of Houston connecting it to the gulf. Even tho its been about two years since ive seen the gulf, i do remember that in just about all those places are nothing but oil rigs. I also seem to remember that while i was in Houston and heading down to Galveston, I passed by massive oil refinery fields, like the one in Port Arthur in Houston, and all along the coastal areas make it seem like very oil rich areas. Although it caused widespread devestation, I dont think that Hurricane Katrina hit the main oil hub of the gulf when it hit new orleans cuz Hurricane Rita is gonna do that. I think even if Hurricane Rita hits Texas on the north or the south, its still effecting their oil market and our pcokets as well.

wow, im impressed. Galveston, Texas.....mayor registers all 58,000 residents on a list to know who's leaving, who needs to leave, and who's staying to keep tabs of who they need to search for after the storm.....mayor then evacuates all residents who dont have a way of leaving on 80 school buses.....all the nursing homes and hospitals already evacuated as well.....all buses filled and left 72 hours before the storm is scheduled to hit.......now thats preparation....

Galveston was rebuilt to withstand a hurricane.....when i went, there was like a 15-20 foot sea wall, which you had to walk down a flight of stairs (or just jump) to get from the top of the sea wall to the bottom where the beach is.....on top of that, the buildings near the shore were all on like 10 foot stilts too.....

...now lets see how FEMA and other relief efforts react to this one....

Right now, 165 sustained winds, cat 5 hurricane (CNN anticipates it to be the third most intense hurricane in United States recorded history)....i think u might want to reanalyze...

The "Labor Day" hurricane - 200 mph winds
    Hurricane Camille - 200+ mph
    Hurricane Gilbert - 185mph
    Hurricane Andrew - 160mph
    Hurricane Hugo - 160mph
    Hurricane Katrina - 155mph

Hurricane Rita is at 165mph and has more than two days to make landfall...

I dont understand this logic...I would never risk my familes life like this. There are THOUSANDS of people that had this same train of though during Katrina, and are regretting it.

yea, if it stays downgraded to this cat 4 with land sustained winds below 200mph, then i would probably stay too.....but if your in the south houston area (like sugarland, etc), id probably take off man.....i remember driving down that highway going from houston to galveston and the land is the same level as the highway and seeing all those blue "evacuation route" signs with a hurricane symbol on it posted up everywhere made me think, ya kno, this road and everything near it would probably be flooded....its not the storm that gets ya, its the water....if youre far enough inland in houston and surrounded by other houses in your neighborhood to block most of the sustained winds, then i dont see a problem in staying....i mean, even tho materialistic things can be replaced, if its not gonna be that strong and as directed towards the houston area, then id have better peace of mind knowing that if a window busts out or if a looter tries to break in, then at least u know you can protect your investment right there and then.....

Yup, as long as you guys can stay out of the right side of the hurricane then you wont take the strongest brunt of the hurricane....(if the hurricane is traveling north, the right side is defined as the east side....if the hurricane is traveling west, then the right side is defined as the north side, etc...)

I understand that you are trying to justify why you are staying there when a huge hurricane is coming your way....its to make yourself feel better.
Ya have the facts of the situation, and your family has decided to not heed the advice of the authorities, and stay put.

Its ridiculous. Yet it seems that its too late anways...Ive been watching SAT footage of the evacuation routes, and its not moving, and thousands of cars have already run out of gas and have overheated, tying up the roads even more.

YES, a NATURAL DISASTER......and youre sitting right in its path, yet your trying to downplay it.

at least you can say is "be safe". i understand the fact that im sitting here waiting for the god damn hurricane, but you dont have to remind me.
the traffic has been tied up for 3 days already, when they announced that rita would be coming. i dont understand how leaving then or now would be any different.

and im not trying to make myself feel any better. where did you get that idea? im actually excited about it. the whole point of this thread was to inform you guys on whats going on and how i feel about it.at first when they announced that rita was on its way, i wasnt scared. as time passed and i saw that all the local walmarts are empty, and every ones trying to get food and water, i'll admit i got alittle scared.
but now all we can do is just wait.
yeah, people have been getting stranded out on the highways, i dont know about you but id rather be in my house than my corolla.

    Hey, YOU started the thread....

The traffic was NOT tied up yesterday morning like it is today

    Excited about it??? Uh, ok.

I dont think you realize the potential that this storm has....which is mind boggling considering katrina hit that region less than a month ago...too many people didnt take katrina seriously, and look what happened. They got trapped in their homes, then complained about how long it too for them to be rescued. All those resources, deaths, etc because someone doesnt want to heed the authorities advice.

They opened up the southbound lanes to become northbound lanes now
