air filter and catback?

hey guys, newbie here. recently became interested in modding of our corollas. I own a 2001 white corolla, COMPLETELY stock.

now, seeing that you guys have a lot of knowledge, give me your outlook on this.

my friends suggested, to start off, to install an air RAM, and if i wanted a catback exhaust? then save money until i can turbo it. now with looks, he said i can do a lot... now what exactly is a lot? what different things can i do with looks?

your possibilities are as endless as your imagination, and remember, anything is possible with money to back it up

if you're gonna go turbo, dont get an intake, it will be useless once you go turbo

even if you put intake now, you wont feel any difference, it's not like the car is gonna start pulling like crazy from 4000rpm and up

if you get a catback, go with a 2.25" for NA or 2.5" if your'e going turbo

Honestly I would highly recommend that you don't do any performance mods to try and get more power out of the engine unless you're going turbo. Thats just my opinion. Don't mess around with air intakes, underdrive pullys, or computer chip mods. The way I see it, you're just wasting your time and money putting these things into your car and not getting much back except for possible problems!

If you can do anything good for your car mechanically speaking, take care of it. You can really make a big difference in suspension. Larger wheels and tires, lowering springs, shocks and swaybars. Those mods you will definatly gain from.

Just don't expect to make your car significantly faster without a turbo setup or nitrous oxide. I honestly wouldn't even mess with nitrous, go straight for the turbo.

As far as asthetic mods... We have the TRD (toyota racing development) lip kits as well as some other body kits made for our cars. You can find them here when people are selling them, or search on Ebay (be careful with ebay).
There's all kinds of things like clear corners, euro tail lights, vent visors, emblems, engine grounding kits, etc. to choose from.

As to your question about air filters and catback. K&N makes a re-useable high flow air filter. It's supposed to give you a boost in HP. Just read this and you'll change your mind about getting one.

Cat-back is something you could do. I really don't see any point unless it's turboed. It's just going to be noisy. If anything is done to the exhaust on a stock setup I would say get a TRD axle back exhaust (muffler). It bolts right up like the stock one does. I haven't had good experience in retrofitting an aftermarket muffler. Other than that you can put a nice looking exhaust tip on!

If your gonna put money in anything other than an engine swap or turbo put it into suspension first. That's where you'll get the most bang for your buck other than just making the car look better.

I see you decided to join us, welcome dude I guarantee you that you're stay here will be much better than vvti since slvr2000fdvspec is not a member here and if he was I'd ban him right away. He does nothing but talk crap so don't worry about it. I'm sure the guys here will eventually help you out somehow as to your questions just like they did with me when I was a newbie hehehe

awsome write up.. the oly change I would make is that after going turbo the TRD exaust will be too small.... honistly I would say get your suspention done first and then save up ato get your turbo... then the DAY you get it run off of the down pipe to a good exaust shop and have them do your exaust to match up to your turbo.... it will be much cheaper that way...

it's all good man, we're here to help and make ur time fun dude..... and car wise that is exactly what I'm doing, I'm installing my wheels/tires and suspension early next week and maybe after december I'm getting a loan for my boost and such, if u need help with something else just let us know

wow, not to piss you off or anything, but if you have to take out a loan for a hobby..you're pretty stupid, what IF you get your turbo all done, and you happen to total the car, still gotta make payments back to the bank..

dude I'll have my loan paid off in less than 6 months.... I make over 1000 a month and I have practically no bills to pay.

your decision, but i rather save up for a couple months compared to oweing someone a couple grand

well for all the work/money I need I can't wait that long to save up, just into the turbo and engine/tranny mods I'll have about 8 grand put into it so I'm not going small on my car but we'll see how everything turns out...

I've given up on doing anything to my corolla. Saving up so in a year when I graduate and i'm fully employed, I can get that E46 M3
