high metal sound at high revs

Whenever I rev my engine past 4000 rpm i hear a metal-on-metal vibration sound (in and out of gear...same sound). At first I thought it was the header and the "heat panel" (I momentarily forget what it's called), but everything is nice and tight, nothing loose.

Do you guys think it's coming from within the engine? I do have a history of revving pretty high. Could it be knocking or detonation?

maybe you managed to loosen a bolt somewhere? have a friend rev it while you walk around the car and listen.. but if it gets worse I would stop immediately cause it could be simple as detonation .. or as bad as rod knock

wow definitly get the advice of any expert you can find along with listening to it next to the engine with the hood up. you don't want to do more damage if there is a real problem in the engine so be careful. good luck and let us know what it was!

I havn't gotten it checked out yet. But I was thinking...could it be the timing chain? Do you guys think that I might have worn down the sprocket or the guide too much from all my hi revving?

Doubt it - pretty tough to stretch out the chain or wear down the sprocket - unless you drove around with low or no oil in the engine. Valves might need to be adjusted - but hard to say without hearing the noise first. Could also be the serpentine belt tensioner or idler pulley - if the bearing goes bad - will make a ton of noise.

But usually any metal-to-metal noise is bad news. You want to get that checked out ASAP - could save some serious money if you catch something before it fails.

i have a what sounds to be the same sound as you. i took my car to the dealer ship and they said theyve been getting alot of rattling noises this summer. they looked at the car and said they couldnt find what was making the noise but "they werent woried about it". they said to fix by bumper and see if it fixes it.( my bumper is a bit loose from driving into a ditch) but the noise was there before that. so i dont know waht to think. i think i might get a second opinion.

if you hit the oil pan it may be a lack of oil going into your engine.

the rollas 98-02 especially the 00-02 version have very weak connecting rod bearings and piston rings.

I'm almost religious w/ my oil changes. There was one point where I did go 6,000 miles w/o an oil change though. Damn, does that mean I have to open up the engine now. I've had a significant drop in funds lately (switching from summer to college work schedule).

no you don't just try and change it on a regualr basis about 3500 miles max. are you running regular, synthetic, or blend oil. the most i have gone was 14K miles without an oil change on my 98 LE 9 i added only 2 quarts over the time) and no problems. the 01 S i have gone about 7K and it had a bit of a rough idle and made minor noises but besides that it runs pretty smoothly. Just change regularly. and if you put a cleaner in it make sure its not harsh. pout less than the reccomended dosage. and do it rarely it you do it too often it may cause more harm than good.

i change my oil every 3000 miles. the car has been making the noise for at leat a month or two by now and it runs fine. i have a feeling its just something loose and rattling. i just need to figure out what it is

What works best to record sound? I guess it would have to be a digital camcorder or something (I dunno what it's called). I use Amsoil most of the time, tried royal purple a couple times, and started out with Mobil 1 the first year I had the car (after two primary oil changes using regular oil). I've had this sound for almost 7 months now. It doesn't seem to be getting worse. Every 3 oil changes I've been using Sea Foam (half down the brake booster vaccum tube and the other half straight into the engine. Then one full can into the gas tank...is that too much? Of course I poured all this before the oil change)

What annoys (sp?) me the most the rattling I hear from my TRD exhaust. I think the exhaust hanger/bracket is touching/rattling off the beam that it's hanging off of. I tried to push it away, and it worked, but after a while it comes back.
