    intentionally misspelling easy words..

    do you do this?

    WHY?!?

i just saw a post elsewhere on the forum that involved the "words" fewd and idk. i physically cringe at the sight of this blatant butchering of the English language. combine this with horrid grammar, and i'm terrified for the future. will generations continue to be less and less interested in typing out what they intend to say, and instead expect everyone to have an "internetese" decoder ring?

I feel your pain. I generally try not to misspell any words and try and use some form of grammer. Makes the post flow a bit better, much easier to read, and people will generally have more respect for your posts.

But I think it is just a case of typing too fast, fatigue, or just plain not caring. Some are just transposed letters - I can live with that, as long as they are not too frequent.

Sometimes I get a good chuckle out of these misspellings, lack of sentence structure, and poor grammer. Makes for very amusing reading.

What pisses me off are the ones that post with all CAPS or posts with no breaks or punctuation. That just shocks the hell out of my eyes. Acronyms and short-hand/internet "netspeak" phrases, though many are quite clever, also causes me great discomfort.

Some that I see (I sometimes use, see others use, or ??? where the hell did that come from)

    "breaks" instead of "brakes"
    "2bctnd" - to be continued
"afaik" - as far as I know
"icwum" - I see what you mean
    "^5" - high five
"2g4u" - too good for you
"fwiw" - for what it's worth
"gmta" - great minds think alike
"mtfbwu" - may the force be with you
"lshmbb" - laughing so hard my belly is bouncing
"obtw" - or, by the way
"20" - where do you live?
    "404" - I have no clue

IMO, LOL, ROTF, WTF, ROTFLMAO, IMHO, STFU, FYI, etc. the list goes on.

I guess that is what you get when people get used to most word processors auto spell checking everything you type. Nobody bothers to do any proofreading themselves.

it can get annoying sometimes, when i do it, i do it as a shortcut or im just typing too fast and fuck up.

i do hate when people point out a small spelling or grammar flaw, like its a sin, this is not a college thesis, i can make a few mistakes

by the way - i don't want to seem "holier than thou" in this case(and yes, that is THOU, not THOUGH). i know i screw up sometimes - we all do - but i make an effort to use punctuation, proper grammar, and i try to ensure the words i type are spelled properly.

if you're not sure of the spelling of something, www.dictionary.com is your friend. use it.

Agreed. I don't think ones writing should be any worse simply because they're posting on a message board. Think about it this way. Your writing is an expression of yourself. If you want to appear lazy, stupid, or uneducated then go ahead and use bad grammar / spelling, but if you were meeting someone from this board for the first time would you want your speech to be a reflection of such posts? I guess I just don't get the whole lack of grammar on the internet thing :superconf Its much easier to type clearly and concisely. Its also much easier for everyone else to read and understand what you're saying.

Yes, mistyping words on purpose or making a habit out of it does get annoying, but you know what is worse that I recently noticed? Writing by hand more than a few sentences has become really painful! I recently had to write by hand a whole page and my hand was hurting like there is no tomorrow. I wonder how future generations will be able to cope when for some reason nothing electronic works and you have to write by hand! Of course I did handwrite in college, but after college I seldomly do. I think is the same for a lot of people.

    hmm.

I for one, most of the time, use different language when i'm typing on the internet. In no way does it reflect how I speak or how I present myself to people.

Example: On forums, IRC, etc... I'll use LOL ROFLMAO WTF or werd, yur, gonna, etc... I also won't use proper grammar sometimes and I often drop the trailing g off of words such as ' running ' is runnin, ' heading ' is headin, etc.

To some extent it's a portrayal of two different personalities. One an online, another offline. I'm schizo! lol :)

However, most of the time when I'm typing something informational out for the web or making a post with instructions. I try to avoid the use of such behavior. (in regards to the respect of the post comment)

and STILL, this continues on this forum. i realize that many of the users are from a background that isn't caucasian, and that many don't speak English as their native tongue, but if you are caucasian and speak English fluently, why the FUCK do you do this??

    WHY???

Possibly the worst example of this that I see, is shortcutting the words, "You" and "Are."

...When I see a sentence or a paragraph, where every 4th word is, "U."

...it makes me want to shoot myself.
My belief on the entire subject is pure and simple laziness. If you are an internet junkie, 10-1 you probably a pretty decent typer.

Being in the military, I'm NO stranger to shortening phrases or abbreviatiing them. We do it for EVERYTHING it seems. So IMO, LOL, and other phrases like that I have been guilty of using. As far as some of the others, I try to keep it to a minimum. My biggest problem is when people use their, there, and they're incorrectly. That really chaps me. :)

[Lately it seems I have more spelling and spacebar typos than ever in my typing. Hmmm, maybe its something in the water.]

Not to be a hypocrite about their, there and they're, but I never payed attention to when its and it's is acceptable. Is "it's" it is and "its" for ownership, or is that backwards? :)

On that note. I can't write in cursive anymore. :( I tried doing it the other day and its not that I've forgotten, its just that the muscle memory isn't there anymore. Scary, huh?

[pondering] Ok I have it. It is all AOL Instant Messenger's fault. The concept that our society likes everything quickly. Microwave food, drive through service for more than fast food now, etc etc. So now we have an even lazier and quicker form of communication other than e-mail. IM. I think in a subconscious or conscious effort to "speed things up" as we do, we shortened our written (or typed rather) text to give us that i nanosecond break from typing the entire word out.

    Thoughts? :)

Yeah yeah, doublepost demon, do your stuff.

Sorry for the really long post guys, but it was three thoughts. I got attacked byt the automerge crap.

you know, i think you have made a point. it IS because society is becoming lazy.

to my own discredit, i don't like using capitalization unless i'm trying to emphasize a word, or it's a proper noun. i don't capitalize the beginning of sentences. i know this is a crime against grammar, but i will take any accusations like a big girl.

i can't stand when i see people TyPe LiKe ThIs(it hurts to read), or when there's no punctuation whatsoever(holy runon sentences!). i don't understand how people can go through life not using a dictionary - there IS www.dictionary.com available to check any word...

Some of it is not laziness.....you probably have to think more to come up with some of these internet phrases when you type it....

I still like cuztomrolla98 using FEWD instead of FOOD....and hes done it twice so far!!! lol

well, i don't mind abbreviations...i can see where they have a place online. it's stuff like "fewd." "ionno"(which i've stopped using), and the attempts people have made to smash words together. i'm guilty of using "whydontcha" and "giterdun" on occasion, but i try my hardest to keep it to an absolute minimum.

I try to use the proper wording for things because it realy does bug me when people use fewd and things like that I wil say LOL and IMHO but those are abvreations for things that would take too long to type out if you are having a normal conversation with somebody... I will however admit I spell things wrong constantly... but not because I try too but because I am just a horrific speller, always have been always will be... I will also admit, as many of you probly notece, I use '...' ALOT!!!! I am trying to break this habbit once and for all... <<<DO'h it bugs even me sometimes and I'm the one doing it.

BangRolla - it's a characteristic i can't help. i ALWAYS speak my mind. this has lost me some "friends" along the way, but i think that's because they can't handle honesty. :)

Customz - i stopped posting for the most part on ALL the forums i frequent because i got sick of trying to translate what people type. i don't like the idea that one needs a decoder just to figure out what is said on a forum.

Now see the FEWD thing I laughed. I know, or I think CR98 can spell food properly.

E is right. Not all of it is laziness.

There is another type of grammar and spelling manipulation that does not come from laziness, and that is the "cutsie" spelling. I think we've all seen it when IMing girls etc. If they are trying to flirt etc they'll abbreviate and spell words differently to emphasise that fact. I have been guilty of that also.

Text is just that, text. When we speak to each other, we also use body language to express our feelings. [talking with our hands, eyebrow movement, lip placement for being upset, the way we stand and whatnot.]
In text, there is none of that, so people resort to using a distortion to help bring about the mood they are feeling. Although I am all for proper grammar and spelling (I screw up a lot too) I know when and when not to use it. It CAN be helpful when trying to get a mood across, but when I'm sending emails at work to Sgts and Officers, you better believe it's straight text. ;)

Man I just can't have simple replies, can I?

Wow...I'm going to open up a can of worms here I just know it... :)

    BangRolla,
I'm curious as to your standpoint against sounding like a ganster in a forum with a user who posts ""New Pixes!...tell me wat chu think guys!" verses a user who has Bang in their username and Bangin' Hard as their motto.
Not trying to start anything, but unless I misconstrued the term, (and I could very well have) This seems a bit ironic to me. ;)
I looked up the origin of the term Bangin online at a few sites. Here's what I found:

    http://www.gang-busters.com/terms/html/..\html\letter_h.aspx
    http://www.yaelf.com/archives.shtml

I know hip-hop and gansta rap are two different styles, but remember hip-hop music and lyrics came from the streets, as did gangs. This was before Rap/hip-hip was split into the various styles it is in today. Back then it waws one, raw genre. A good chunk of Hiphop incporporated a lot of gang nomenclature and affiliation in the lyrics. Not all of it mind you. :) (Ice-T, NWA, to name a couple)

Not trying to call you out or call youa hypocrite, because the term today is widely used all over the US if not the world, but the origins of the word point to be from the street and gang related.
