i have driven both cars recently (both were 05's) and IMO (not because i am a corolla owner)and the Rolla feels stronger where as the civic dose actually feel a bit under powered while the corolla is only adequate. As for racing i'd stick with the Rolla because even though the Civic may have VTEC when it hits the end of the powerband it feels as if though it runs out of power and struggles to keep power up. The VVT in the Rolla has bit less of an advantage due to VTEC but you can at least hear and feel the car pulling. like i said this is what i think after test driving both cars.

the toyotas have the HP advantage but the civics have a more torque... I have raced (on the track and on the street) a civic with a driver of the exact same skill as me and he beat me off the line but in the long run the corolla over took him... ok well not the long run but the short run...

    *edit*
VVT-i and VTEC are the same thing... kindof like duramax and powerstroke... both desles diffrent manufacturers...

I read the whole thing. From all the numbers, it seems like the corolla has an advantage. But they are trying to defend their civics.

Civic's are definatly the more modable car. But I got a corolla because i think they look cooler and the interiors are way better. Toyota makes higher quality parts in my optionion too. The Honda Interriors always scare me quality wise.

:haha: VVT-i and VTEC are not the same at all

vvt-i changes intake cam timing continuously
vtec changes the timing 1 to 3 times based on the version.. but it's not continuous
    only i-vtec is continuous.

I've driven both an auto Civic EX and auto Corolla S. One big complaint I had about the Civic was that it felt torqueless. I kept noticing it had to rev high to get the bitch going. The Corolla felt like that too, but I don't remember having to rev it as high as the Civic. But these observations are based on experiences more than 1 year ago. So I could be wrong on this. But one thing I do remember for sure, the D17 and the 1ZZ-FE doesn't beat the torque delivery of the 5S-FE.

Oh and Denver Rolla is a n00b for thinking VTEC and VVT-i are the same.

One that is definately not true. Two torque? i dunno they seem pretty slow at takeoff.

now please tell me as to how that work in relation to VVT-I and VVT-Li though they have a similar use the mechanical and electronic systems are comepletely different. VVT systems work with oil pressure and overall engine performance and can get more power at low,mid or high depending on vehicle load and accelerator usage. VTEC systems have a sliding cam lobes and can't compensate for the load the car has . it runs on what the computer has it set whereas VVT-i and Li can automatically work itself for best perfomance. So at times it may seem the Corolla can have High HP at times or better low end torque and VTEC stays right where its at and can't change unless a computer parameter is reset to open and any given time or as soon as the engine starts.

becasue they are cheaper (not by much mind you) easier to work on and have better support overall, the corolla was originally to be a workhorse but later evolved into a compact family sedan and a first time vehicle to others.
