    Supra or 3000GT (Hmmmmmmmm)

I'm thinking about Buying a Supra next month but today I ran into a guy selling a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 for pretty cheap. It has a 3.0l v6 just like a Supra and has twin turbo. It also has all wheel drive and rear steering. I'm just wondering if I shouldn't get a 3000GT and pimp it out instead of blowing nearly twice the money on a Supra? I personally think Supra's look better but I think the 3000GT VR4 would own the Supra on the track with its all wheel drive? What do you guys think?

3000 GT is heavy... supra engine is I-6 which is better then a V-6 and the 2JZ can handle lots of boost...

wow...i am DEFINITELY not awake. i saw the thread title and thought it said 2000GT, in which case i was going to tell you to buy that and send it to me, since it's the rarest production Toyota in existence.

...if you can afford the car and the insurance AND the maintenance, get the supra.

Stock for stock, the Supra will be faster (the 3000GT is a heavy mofo), but if you can get it for a good price (and everything checks out, maintenance and receipts) the can be made to go as good as a Supra... a friend of mine brother-in-law has a 3000GT (Turbo, awd) with some mods done to it (sinle turbo, more boost, intercooler)supposely making about 450whp, and that is a fast car! Very very fun car to be in :)

Besides all the things everyone has mentioned already, the Supra pwnz the 3000GT in reliability.

mitsubishis suck. i've had one and its less reliable then a kia. i'd only buy one if you got money to blow and have a daily driver, cuz they are fast, but only for like 100 miles at a time ;)

It is a tough call - depending on what you want it to do (fun project car, near daily driver or daily driver, street / track monster).

Many people already know the potential the Supra has and can make - awesome car. But then you have to factor in how much of that potential you can use on a day to day basis (unless you opt for a street / track car) - the AWD and overall stability of the heavier VR4 makes more sense in daily instances. It might get spanked on the track - but on the road, you have more usable power to you at any given time.

Stock for stock - both are pretty close. Weight has its disadvantages - but I think it is on the order of 220lb difference? With 320HP/315TQ with both stock for stock - VR4 should take the Supra off the line - but that is about it. VR4 gearing is on the tall side - Supra will have no problem spanking it from a roll or at high speed.

VR4 main weak point is probably the transaxle (heard tons of problems with thoses) - engine is not bad, many like it. Has a fancier suspention setup than the Supra plus AWD (even with a weight disadvantage, can keep up with Supra in a road race. But the Supra has better aftermarket support, nearly bulletproof tranny and engine, any problems with off the line performance can be helped with better tire selection ("cheater" slicks).

I guess it boils down to how much you want to end up spending and cost of insurance.

Stick with the supra. 3000GT's have too many mechanical and electrical problems. The supra is just a better vehicle overall,IMO.

Wow, thanks for all the input everyone. The car is a 1994 3000GT VR4 and it runs smooth as a kitten and just got new turbos but I do agree that the maintinance probably will suck since Misubishi sucks. I think I'm leaning towards a Supra. I'll probably get an NA 5 speed supra and then turbo it with an aftermarket kit because the TT supra's are hard to find in good shape around here. Thanks everyone.

now that is even a worse idea then buying a VR4. everyone i've talked to wished they bought a TT from the beginning. just pick a few that are farther away and take a weekend to go see them.

*edit* i've been waiting to buy a 5g mirage for awhile now as a project car. it's known to have a weak auto tranny. i got tired of waiting and broke down - bought a crappomatic when i shouldnt have. in 2 months the tranny died, and after a few personal issues i'm forced to sell. worse decision i've ever made. take the time to wait for that perfect deal to come along - all the options and the condition you want. trust me, if yuo have patience in the end you wont be dissapointed.

The internals on the NA and TT are different, the NA isn't as bullet-proof as the TT version, so if you go NA and plan on turboing, just wait to find a nice TT... much easier to turbo properly (since it already is turboed) and cuold produce alot mor power reliably... unless you just plan on diong a low boost kit like 7psi or so (but even then, price the kit, and see if its worth it over the cost of a TT)

Supras are known well over any other import car in the past hell they still hold even more respect than the EVO or STi shit..... I love Supras man and always will, my dad used to own one back in 95' but sadly I didn't get to see it but in pictures :( since I came to the U.S in 99'..... well hopefully someday I'll have the chance to own one from 93-98 cause man I love these things, couldn't ask for anything better

I didn't read the whole thread, but this is what you should do. Go check out the 3kgt boards ( www.3si.org ) along with the Supra boards. The 3000GT VR4 is an AWESOME car, but it is VERY high maintenance and expensive to work on and have worked on. You have been warned.

From what I read the Supra 3.0l I6 is a dream compared to the VR4's engine to work on :) So I'll go for the Supra. But now I'm reading in these other threads that the Scion tC can handle 18psi of boost and make over 400whp? WTF. If this turns out to be true I may just have to buy one of those for the fuck of it and save some money :)

yeah but the supra holds more exclusivity than the TC and the supra is already known to handle high horsepower applications. Even though the TC has been out for a while and has high support there are not that many supras left then you will see which one hold the title of being the King of imports IMO.
