    I got me a question

Alright, so me and my friend just finished working on my KYB struts to complete my suspension set-up and I noticed that when I steer to the left, it sounds like my rotors are grinding, when I steer to the right I hear nothing. I've heared this before prior to working on my ride, but only when I am making a sharp turn, now even a slight turn and you can hear it. what can it be?

Check your pads and rotors in the front, most likely culprit.

Actually, what kind of grinding sound is it?

like when you turn, it feels like it is rubbing into something. I've been researching this online and bearings was mentioned which was the same side that was just replaced by toyota last feb. and it only does it when I turn to the left.

I could be your bearings, it could be your brakes, or, since you lowered the car, it could be your tires rubbing against the inner fender lining... check the rubbing/fender lining first, if not that, jack up the car and turn the wheels by hand, turn them, turn again, see if you can reproduce the sound, and you mgih be able to pin point where its coming from more accurately... or you could always bring it into a garage to get checked out (most garages up here will check your car for free).

I know it is not rubbing against my fender. so it could be either the rotors or the bearings. I don't see any physical scrapes on the rotors though.

what year do you have? also does it do it at all speeds? Check the inner part of the frame where the wheels turn because for example when i lowered my car my wheels began to hit on the frame of the car and i wound up having to bend the edge of the frame about 1/2 inch on both sides in the front where the direction of the wheels are turning. if its no this it maybe what my 98 did and that was the tranny bearings, but i doubt that is it.

it's a 99 and it does it at all speeds when I steer to the right. It doesn't sound like it is rubbing against the frame cuz I sticked my head out to listen to it and it definitely seems to be coming somewhere in the wheel/rotor area. I'm taking it monday to have a 4 wheel alignment, I might have them check it out before I take it to the dealership for warranty on the repair they did on the bearing not too long ago, but I want to make sure so they don't charge me if it ends up not being the bearing.

Ask if they charge for just finding the cost of the problem, like I mentioned earlier, alot of garages up here don't charge to just look at a car (ito nly takes them 5~10 minutes, and if the car is already there, they figure they'll get that time back when you get it fixed)

okay so I followed your suggestion and I jacked the car up. I turn it to the right and slowly rotated the tire and I think I have found the problem, but not sure how this can be fixed. You know how there is a back plate sorta looking thing after the rotor and caliper? well the back end of the rotor on the bottom is grinding up against that plate. That is where the noise is coming from. I compared it to the right side and the right side does not hit that back plate. Do you know how I can fix that or how I would explain to the garage that kinda problem?

the back plate your talking about is a rain /debris guard plate it helps keep the disc dry in wet weather and also help road debris from hitting it. you can simply push it back with your hand . I wonder if you hit something or pulled up the wheel when you took it off because i have no idea how else that could happen.

ooohhh cool. I woke up this morning and jacked it up again, took out the wheels and push it a little to get some space between it and the rotor, I test drove it and wala! no more grinding noise. thanks guys for your suggestions, I would'nt have known what to do if it was for your advices. thanks!

Yeah, something to keep in mind -- whenever you're doing ANYTHING around those front brakes. Those metal guards are VERY flimsy and have serious bitch-fits when bent the wrong way. :) Glad it's all happy!

trust me it does alot to keep your brakes clean of road debris.Even though it may look like a piece of metal they really do work.

but I mean as a mechanical stuff like controlling somthin or functioning as a part of something. It doesn't have any effect on the performance of the suspension and brakes

If you kept reading the problem was his brake guard thing rubbing against the rotors. Just my 10 cent info....
