    Crossfit vs Normal Gym

I've been looking into getting back into going to the gym and like what i see at crossfit, but cost is way up there. Anyone try crossfit that was going to a regular gym and have their thoughts? I know some knock on crossfit is that you can't get big, but I am not looking to be a body builder. I don't need to squat 500 pounds or bench 300, just to say I can. Crossfit in my area is around 140 a month versus $10 a month for a gym. Then there's MMA gyms which are right around the same cost as crossfit and some are cheaper at around $80 a month.

I'd check into any accreditation of the trainers themselves - as not all trainers are alike. There are a few places in my area that cater to the CrossFit fitness program - in part, spurred on by the strong interest in MMA/MA programs.

Potential problem I see is the differences in quality between CrossFit establishments. CrossFit methodology itself is sound - good variety in training - excelling at cardio and strength because of the short but intense sessions. But if the trainers are not trained properly or have limited exposure to the methodology - participant injury could be quite high.

Lots of discussion on the lack of periodization in the workout - basically overtraining of the body, the intense workouts of the CrossFit program doesn't give ample time for body to properly recover.

Don't know - could be completely different in your area - each tainer probably has their own take on the program.

Couple of the guys at my shop are very workout savvy - a good mix of traditional strength and condition type guys and the guys that jump on the latest and greatest out there. Message that I've picked up is a well designed S&C program will easily outstrip a CrossFit one.

I say whatever it takes to keep you motivated in a regular training program. Be it a gym, martial art studio, dancing, etc. You can even rotate through the various programs until you find one you like. Even if you don't like them and quit, at least you're staying active. The fastest and cheapest way to getting fit is probably just getting a pair of running shoes and doing roadwork.

Bringing back an old thread. I've been doing CrossFit since July 2012 and love it. I only go twice a week and then go to a regular gym when I am not at CrossFit.
