    99 corolla instrument cluster

The instrument cluster that I currently have in my car is the one without a tach, pictured below.

If I were to get an instrument cluster for my year that the tach built into it, like below:
would it just plug in and work or would I be missing some wires or even a connecter? If anyone has any experiance please let me know.

A simple swap. Everything plug and play. But you should swap you speedo as well since your original mileage is stored in there.

yeah all you have to do is change the speedo. interchanged my 98LE to my friends prizm. his had no tach and mine did so i gave it to him and he put it on and it works with no problems at all. its the same for the rolla so ther should be no problems.

i had my current cluster out and was examinging it, i noticed a little chip on the back that was easy to remove. anyone know if this chip is what contains the speedo milage info? i think it does, but have no way to test this untill i get the replacement cluster.

no actually if you have a 98 stay with cluster for a 98-00 those are direct swaps. I know cuz I have one. 01-02 models have a different wiring. You will run into a problem with your signal light and rear defogger. You will also need an outside ambient sensor or you will have -E- on one of the displays. When you take out your cluster, there will be 6 screws behind it holding the speedo, remove that and swap it out with the one you have so you can keep your original milage. It's not hard at all.

I never had a problem with switching the 98 to the 01 and vice versa, the 98 was an LE model and the 01 was an S both had the exact same thing. I took the 98 and put it on my friends Prizm and his did not have a tach and a simple switch and everything worked and pretty much we still have no problems at all.

its an 02 Prizm BTW. its the base model.

There are a few members here I think that did the swap from their 98-00 to 01-02 and had a problem with the rear defogger coming on when you turn the right signal light and vice versa. I also have the schematics of their wiring diagram and they are different. I don't know about the S models since their tachs are red. It might be different but I just don't know.

i thought they have pretty much the same setup as the other models. here is how it went 98 LE into a 02 Prism base. It has nothing worng with it at all and as a matter of fact i went over to see him and i drove his car and no problems.

No, not for mileage; I tried and tested that also.
The mileage is stored in the odometer unit in one of those chips.

Your 1st post photos; those 2 look like they will work fine.
The problem with my clusters was that I had a black one and purchased a gray one from a LE, I had to swap odometer and gage faces also to keep my mileage and not have the gages in 2 colors. NOTE: not an issue if you plan to use aftermarket gage faces.

If you have a black cluster w/NO tach and you find one w/tach in black (just like photos on 1st post), then you can just remove the clear covers and black gage trim panels and unscrew the odometers from the back and swap them; that's it (same as per Silver_Nitrate's post above).

Just don't buy the black with red numbers, 'S' clusters are wired differently, and may not work with 98-00 Corollas.
