A/C doesn't work when it's hot outside. Help!

Well, like the title says, my A/C doesn't work when it is hot outside, like during a sunny day, but it does work when it isn't hot, like during the evening, night, or if it's cloudy. The fan still blows but the air doesn't get cold so I just get a warm breeze. I think it has something to do with the fact that the sun heats up my car and thus temporarily affects something in the A/C unit which, due to the heat, stays disabled until whatever it is cools off. Just a theory. Does anyone know what's up with it? I'm not really familiar with the components of the A/C unit. I am probably going to end up taking it in but I would like to know what is wrong beforehand. Thanks. :)

Compressor problem and/or lack of sufficient coolant.

Start small, and work your way up. Coolant system check first, then look into the actual A/C components.
