Oil Change ~ people from hot states, your schedule

So i do all my oil changes myself at ever 5k miles. Well its been 3000 since i've been in NY and its bloody hot here so my dad told me to get one done anyways just to be safe since more heat = greater wear. Do you think its necessary? or should i just wait till the other 2000 are up and i'm back in MI (which is a 800 mile drive)

hah yeah but yota says every 5k so i just follow that schedule. if i know i've been doing a lot of odd driving like sitting at idle in traffic or something of that sort i do it earlier. I'm just curious if its worth the earlier change, not really concerned with the 30 bux i gotta shell out to the dealer cuz i dont have my equipment to do it myself :)

I wish it was cheap. the oil change for my moms accord comes out to 65 bucks total and that is just the filter and the oil, the rolla is about 60 a bit less. but then again the accord get a oil change every 25K miles and the Rolla every 3K or less depending on driving conditions. All of our vehicles use AMSOIL lubricants.

I always did 3K mile oil changes. If you do any city driving then you should do 3K mile oil changes. Have you seen oil at 3K miles? It is dark as hell. I would say if you are running synthetic oil, then 5K is fine.

Hell I even did 3K oil changes when I was running synthetic.

What toyota says in their manuals is the minimum required interval. Whenever I brought my car to tthe dealership they would stick one of those reminder stickers on my windshield for the next oil change and it was at 3K miles intervals. If you want to save some money and time just buy oils and filter in bulk, and just pay any garage 10 bucks to change your oil. Also don't forget to buy the drain plugh washer if you gonna do it yourself.

    That is my 2 c's

laz, i realize what you are saying. i do the changes myself and my oil's never been black. always a dark brown. 99% of my driving is highway. I'll have to see what time this place by me closes so i can take it in for a change either today or early AM tomorrow.

I change my Mobil1 full synthetic every 5K... in my old tercel and in my new rolla... in the terc it came always dark as night, and I expect no different from the rolla... and any other oil at the 5000... not even the "drive clean 7500"

yeah, the toyota ones are made out of like a organic material, while other cars have metal ones. It usually costs 50c at the dealership.

Unless your running synthetic, you shouldnt be stretching it out to 5k.

And yeah, you can switch over. They usually say not to switch from synthetic back to regular.

I notice on the civic if i go over say 3500 miles the car idles noticeably rougher, so I always change at or slightly over 3K.

Even when using mobil 1 synthetic in the Corolla I usually changed between 3500 - 4500.

Get an oil change done before you leave and new oil fiter. I'm about to take a long trip too 800+ miles to Denver in 2 weeks. I change the oil usually around 5K, but sometimes depending on how the oil looks I change it sooner or later. I use mobile 1 by the way.

    Hot? NY? I guess.. :p

I change at 4-6k in FL (Mobil1 synthetic, 170k engine). Switched from regular oil at about 120k.
