Didn't see a thread yet so ugh.. here we go.

I feel really sorry for all the people affected by this disaster in Japan. Based on the events that are unfolding it seems like the US navy is doing some to help but it doesn't seem to be making any real difference.

It seems to me there is ways they could have helped more but they simply sat on the sidelines.

Few things I don't understand at all...

Why weren't replacement diesel generators air dropped within 12 hours of failure to the power plants.. Why are they running out of diesel and the reactors starting to fail again? Why didn't they tether an aircraft carrier to the plant to provide any power needed to stabilize it? (AC puts out up to 190 MW of power), etc..

Anybody else have comments on the situation?

Why is it always the US that needs to rush to everyones assitance? No wonder were always in debt. Send them food from the red cross, 10k people dead, unfortunate, but they should have had a contigency plan for such scenarios.

Why have a base in japan at all then? Another huge waste of money it seems.

i agree with helping out japan since they are one of the united states biggest allies. Haiti was a disaster before the earthquake and is no help to the united states and i was and am completely against helping them. we also owe japan billions that was borrowed by our government.

As for getting aid to Japan sooner, that wasn't possible due to two big reasons. One is the aftershocks - numbering well over a 100, with a majority of them above 5.0 magnitude. The second is the Pentagon making sure that all US Navy assets are accounted for and secured. I'm pretty sure the men and women on those ships and on base were itching to help out - they just had to follow protocol in these catastrophic scenarios. Can't help someone if you get yourself in trouble as well.

    what day job!

I'd be glad to go if somebody would send me. Being jobless here sucks worse than volunteering there by far.

its incredibly unfortunate what happened there.. its messed up how people are saying stuff like "remember pearl harbor?" and how we shouldn't give them aid.
but I get the point on how we always give massive amounts of aid when we have many problems here at home.

so, anybody with more knowledge than me on what's the status on the nuclear plant?

    if that shit blows...

all I know is that all 4 reactors are bad, #3 is the least messed up
and there was a fire @ 1 (hydrogen blew up... so fire or spark) and 4

we won't see any nuclear power in the US for another 30~50 years...
people don't understand that it needed a magnitude 8.8~9.0 quake to make it fail

Plain and simple, the Japanese didnt ask for it at that point.

This is Japan we're talking about...not some third world country. Japan can easily take care of itself if need be......just like the US wouldnt immediately be reaching out for help if something were to happen here.

The offer was put on the table IMMEDIATELY by the US.

    You mean any new reactors?

And people that have the mentality of "why help others" piss me off.

I have family in Japan but everyone is okay. It suck for the peope who are affected but i'm sure things will work out for many.

I still am very pro-nuclear power plants even though many say its bad, especially in a very earthquake and tsunami prone location like Japan. I am annoyed with people going frantic around here about the fear of radiation hitting California. grrrr..

Cmon.... buying iodide tablets? Put the tinfoil hat on!

    ome new news:

Japan has OFFICIALLY requested help from international allies, specifically the US.
They have officially increased the threat level from a 4 to a 5 on the international nuclear scale....... though its been suspected that they have been keeping the number 1 lower than reality.
TMI was a level 5. Its been declared that the current situation is worse than TMI

Japan's radioactive fallout has reached Southern California, but first readings are "about a billion times beneath levels that would be health threatening"

There IS plutonium in all 4 reactors. (there was earlier debate on this)

Burying the entire plant in sand and concrete is a last resort, but is being considered. The fact that this is being discussed shows how dire the situation is.

Power to the pumps are hoped to be restored by Sunday....though they fear the pumps have been damaged and are unusable. So restoring the power lines to them may be pointless. Have to try at least though.

No 3 is most critical at this point.

Japan has been known for their nuclear power plant cover-ups....this situation is proving that once again.

Also Nuclear experts from the US, in addition to the IAEA will be on site starting today......so there will be some legit, accurate information released soon.

Riiight, because all American surveys are "legit," I wont be surprised if they get paid off to stay quiet. Our way of paying back some of that "debt."

Oh and those Iodide pills are pointless, since the amount of radiation is not enough to physically harm our bodies, the pills actually will hurt you more than help you by causing nausea.

I was also told there's warnings here in Oregon to stay inside and out of the rain starting today (Friday).

Well this sucks, this is like round two for me in radiation exposure, can anyone say Chernobyl?

Which survey are you referring to?

Yeah...pointless in that I doubt that radiation will be a threat to the West Coast...but still not a waste of money, supplementing with iodine if it's not in your multi- will assist in maintaining proper thyroid hormone balance, required to properly regulate blood pressure, weight, body temperature, heart rate and metabolic rate.

Because of the "low sodium" diet crazes and people thinking that avoiding salt whenever possible is a smart thing to do, and people not getting enough saltwater fish, iodine supplementation isn't a bad idea.

So now its a legit threat? Or no?

    That explains some things..... j/k

    ^^^new mod? hehe

    Some updates from today:

    http://www.naturalnews.com/031781_Fukushima_evacuation.html#ixzz1HGAZTAWw

    • Releases of radiation from the Fukushima nuclear power plant are "now significant and continuing" said Andre-Claude Lacoste, said the head of France's Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN). (http://news.asiaone.com/News/Latest...)

    • A "grayish smoke" cloud was observed coming from the roof of Reactor No. 3, causing an evacuation of all the workers there while Japanese authorities figure out if it's safe to return the workers to the site. It was called an "alarming setback" and provides further evidence of a worsening problem with Reactor No. 3 (where the MOX plutoniumfuelis stored). (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wor...)

    • Radioactivecontaminationhas now likely reached to a 100km radius around theFukushimapower plant.

    • WHO admits that theradiationleaks from Fukushima are far worse than what the public has so far been told (http://www.speroforum.com/a/50605/W...).

    • Power cables have so far been physically rigged to all six reactors, but only one or two coolant pumps are working so far.

    • Abnormal levels of radiation continue to be found in Japanese food and milk products.

    • The World Bank reports thatJapanwill need to spend $235 billion to rebuild after the Fukushima disaster. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/world...) Note: Japan currently owns over $800 billion in U.S.debtand may start selling off some of that debt to pay for its rebuilding efforts.

    • Two of the six reactors are now considered placed in "cold shutdown," meaning they pose very little risk of further escalations. Reactor No. 3, on the other hand, still poses a threat of what experts are now calling "re-criticality." (A fuel rod meltdown.)

Aw, dont be such butt hurt babies. You guys are used to the lies by now aren'tcha? Nobody wants to admit they don't have their own nuclear reactors under control, and the affect of the radiation on their market, thats gonna hurt them alot. I dont think they even know what thyre gonna say about it yet.

Which japan will start selling off to other countries soon to recoup some of the money for cleanup/re-building.
