moved. 1ZZ vvti or not is a POS for heavy modification. If you're willing to invest $5000, get a 3s-gte

If you wanna stay close to stock, I would say a 1ZZ-FE with VVTI.

Actually, people don't give these motors enough credit. They are an awesome base if you have the money/time to throw at them to give them more power. They can take more of a beating than people give them credit for so long as you do it *correctly*.

The 1zz block is compared to a 4age block ..... You need to built it up .... If you dont want to turbo then build your head , But the block you have is worth fixing like vortex said ... :)

That's because most 1zz's burn oil through the rings. Go out to your muffler and wipe your finger on the inside of the tailpipe. If it's covered in black crap thats one sign of burning oil. The block could still be savable, but would need to be rebuilt.

Well do you have to fill your engine every now and then? Also a sign of oil loss.

I have this and I do not burn oil. This can also be soot caused by running too rich. My soot is from extended high RPM sessions on the track. The stock ECU runs the engine ass-rich under high load.
