IT work is not that hard or not as hard as people make it out to be. there's just computer stupid people that think it takes a lot of knowledge. are you just literally sitting there all day?

Depends on what type of IT work. IT groups span jobs from as high up as CIO to a summer intern as a temporary webmaster.

But I agree - there is a huge disparity of skill levels out there and what constitutes "technical" skill. I've seen some "supposedly very skilled" IT personnel, that I wouldn't have even attempting to plug in my coffee maker - you know, the ones that have about a dozen certifications but can't find their a$$ in the dark with both hands - level of common sense.

Then there are ones that are kicking in insane hours, working behind the scenes - keeping everything working smoothly, but get neither the respect or recognition they deserve.

Sounds like some government and private contract jobs I've seen from time to time. Employees that want to do something, but are paid to just sit for hours on end - like some UAW workers collecting checks for not working - as part of their union contract with the automaker.

As for the pics - the Mario and Domo ones are very well done! Closed room with a bunch of dry erase markers - talk about brain damage from the fumes.

some of it is hard... IT is not just computers, its also the network side, and knowing what does what in the network, and having to set things up. and at least here most of our programs are in-house written UNIX based bank only stuff... I've looked at the setup for them, alll I said was WTF, and I think of myself as computer smart and willing to learn.... I have however learned alot in the month that I have been here..

to answer your question.. yes right now I am just sitting here for 12 hours drinking coffie and looking at facebook

yeah.. basically I'm one of those want to do something but am paid to sit and watch glass all day, its a real change from working on cars oll day... I do work 12 hour shifts 4 days a week, so I guess that I do put in insaine hours and with out me knowbody would know when things went down "because most of the people that work here are too busy fixing shit that ain't broke" [quote from my coworker on my first day], I do how ever enjoy the time it gives me to read and catch up on the daily goings on on facebook... :)

and thanks by the way.. took me like 4 hours to do mario... usually I suck at drawing but everyonce in a wile I take my time and something intresting comes out... but I have to look at it wile I'm drawing it... I guess like mentaly tracing

wow just read back at what I said... sorry.. this is 7:30 on day 9 I only have an hour left... :) then I work day 10 and get off unill sunday... maybe I'll sleep untill I have to get up for work.. :)

And studying cisco networking (theories and all) is a handful. At least it was for me. I did 2 semesters of cisco and barely passed the 2nd one.

I did 2 classes of Unix and that was fun. Lots of typing because all we used was command prompt.

It is harder than you think. Just because you know your way around a PC doesn't make you an IT expert any more that knowing how to dial a telephone makes you a telecommunications expert.

Thing is, IT is kind of like the medical profession. It is so diverse that no one can be an expert in everything. So you have to specialize. A good network guy might sit on his ass for 90% of the day, but he's worth his weight in gold if the system tanks.
