    Oil changes

Ok guys, im sure between all the modding, bodykits, wheels, suspensions, swaps, FI, etc... it all comes down to the most basic things such as an oil change that keep it goin till the end. So im at 135K and was wondering if I should switch to some special brands and such to keep my stock 7afe in tip top shape. I do get on it once a while to hear that intake scream lol and i do smell oil when im close to redline so just throwin this out there to see what others recommend and are using. I get my oil changes from my mechanic and let him do his thing. I dont even know kinda oil he puts (most likely the conventional stuff) and how many quarts. He knows his stuff but I just wanna know to be on the knowledgable side of things. So lets hear it, how yall like to lube yourselves lol

I use non synthetic Pennzoil 10w-30 every 3000-3500 miles. I also use BG MOA which is an amazing Motor Oil Additive. The amount of oil you put in, depends on upon what that cars capacity is. My mom's old Rodeo was 5.5 quarts with filter change, 5.0 without. Mine is 6.5 with filter change, 6.0 without. I change the filter everytime I change the oil.

    Hmm I'm about the same.
I used full synthetic 5-30w with a Toyota filter every 3,500 miles.
I have recently tried Lucas Oil Stabilizer and a "high mileage synthetic blend" to help with my oil consumption.
I'm at 120,000 miles and I consume around 1 quart and oil between oil changes.
    No leaks or smoke.....

definitely not worth going to the dealer for an oil change. i just did the 30k on my fj and use amsoil 5w-30 every 5k. i just took an oil sample and will be sending it in to get tested to see if i can do 7500 mile intervals. i also changed all my other fluids to amsoil with the exception of the transmission. don't forget the check spark plugs which is another easy item to change.

well appreciate everyones comments but from what ive heard is, going to a oil with less viscosity while your car burns oil is bad. Im at 10W 30 so which oute should i go now? I went to advanced auto parts and god so many different kinds of oils and brands, i elt clueless even tho i have some idea to what it is i should put in my next oil change

I use Mobil 1 synthetic with OEM Toyota filters every 3500 miles. It takes about 4 quarts and sometimes I run BG MOA as well

How do you go about sending in oil samples to a lab? I remember it was mentioned somewhere before, but I can't find it.

I'll have to try BG MOA. I'm starting to burn some oil.

it takes about 2 weeks to receive it, but it's free to get the sample container. then you just send in the check with the sample.

Point of interest if you are going to use MOA. MOA works better the more you use it. If you don't put a can in every oil change, at least do it every other. It extends the life of the oil by roughly 2k miles. It also really helps get the oil flowing on cold startups which are an issue here in Colorado, maybe not so much farther south.

lol ok so many options to choose from, lemme summarize the recommended items:

    1) non synthetic Pennzoil 10w-30 with BG MOA which is an amazing Motor Oil Additive
    2) full synthetic 5-30w with a Toyota filter
    3) Lucas Oil Stabilizer and a "high mileage synthetic blend"
    4) amsoil 5w-30
    5) Mobil 1 synthetic with OEM Toyota filters
So now, i have the conventional stuff put in at the moment, 10W 30. Which route should i go? Maybe go thicker?

is the "extending the life of the oil" a claim by the company or has someone actually got the oil analyzed?

i would recommend going with a conventional, but when you do this oil change grab a sample and spend $22 to find out what goes on with the engine. from there you can make an educated decision based on your results on what to go with. everyone can come up theories, but until you know whats happening in the engine you don't know for sure. after the first sample you can take another one at 3000 miles and send it again and see whats happening before adding any additives. to take the sample at 3000 miles you can pump it out your dip stick so that you don't need to do a drain and fill change.

I've heard from alot of my vendors that on high mileage stuff you can't just... jump head first into synthetic. Oil is something you have to experiment with. Find what works for you. Every other 10w30 on the market combined with MOA makes the toyota valve tick worse. Valvoline is the only one I've come across that seems to quiet it down. It requires testing, feeling, hearing etc. Just because something works perfect for someone else doesn't mean it will for you.

are you sure there's no leaks anywhere? sounds like you might be ignoring the issue and dealing with burning oil. going through a quart in 3k miles seems like a lot.

Yeah, I though the same thing. So I brought it to the local Toyota dealership, they told me I had " a slight leak in the front timing chain cover" and I did not replace the gasket on the oil plug with my last oil change..... and the kicker "the engine could be burning oil"
hahhaaa what a waste of $99.00, in essence it was a really expensive car wash.

That was on the low end of my estimate, I filled up a quart about half way through and I was a quart low just before my oil change :(

I don't have any leaks, no profuse smoke (just thin white smoke during a start) and I sense no loss in power.

I could have Toyota run a compression test at another ....$150 I know what they are going to tell me though...
The only options are rebuild or swap right?

Noooo... Don't buy a Fram because it is on sale. Actually never buy a Fram even if they give it away (Well, maybe I'm over reacting)

Agreed. Frams are crap. Mobile one or Toyota filters only for me.

My 2002 car has a little over 100K miles. Owned it since new. Used Castrol GTX 5W-30 all the time. Change every 5K like the manual says. Burns about 1/5 - 1/4 quart. No sludge or problems ever.
