    Lotus ELise with 1ZZ engine

    Hi

Got myself a Elise with the 1zz engine, should have bought the R version with the 2ZZ engine in but my mistake. Anyway a place in the UK is offering to turbo it. What kind of power (torque )can the internals/clutch/gearbox take before it lunches itself? What kind of power cabn be expected?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but new here and all the Lotus stuff in the UK is mainly based around the 2ZZ engine.

    Cheers

I'm no turbo expert, but you should be able to run 6-8 psi no problem all day long.

6-8 daily is ok on stock 1ZZ, with built internals owners have puses 12-18 psi daily

Right OK, so if I want to run more boost I take it I will need to upgrade the bottom end a fair bit. Though with 8psi tunning shop reckon I should have about 230Bhp & 204lb ft torque. In a car that wheighs about 860Kg think it should be fast enough ;)

Crap Photo, sorry but here you go.

I don't think it's his house. In front of some building. A library?
    Widebody, maroon lotus ftw.

Its definatley not my house, if it was I would own a Zonda F and not a little plastic car :D

Photo was taken outside of Harewood house in Yorkshire (UK) near where i live.
As for my Elise, well its sooo much fun to drive, RWD, Rear engined and handles like a hosue fly. If you ever have the means to get one I thourghly recommend it, perm a grin on your face every time you get in it. Had it for a while now but I have got used to it so looking for more power. Easiest way, well rather than full engine rebuild or dropping a 2ZZ in is to stick a turbo on it.

I don't believe we even have the 1ZZ Lotus here in the States but I could be wrong. My buddy used to work at forcedfed engineering where they turbo charge 2ZZ's all day long. The 1ZZ can reliably handle 8PSI maybe more but the key is engine management. This is proven by the TRD USA 1ZZFE Supercharger which cranks out 7.5 PSI while maintaining factory warranty.

The ecu on the federal commonly known as the R (2ZZ) over here and the S (1ZZ-FE) has recently been cracked by a guy from the States. So tunning the ECU is no longer a problem. Glad to know that they can handle about 8psi on standard internals, should help to keep the cost down.

What kind of power whp and torque figures are you seeing?

according to reports from 2 guys I know... 8psi (WELL MADE) with a turbo gives you about some... 80~100hp more making some 190~200whp

Look up Monkey Wrench Racing. You should be able to find alot of answers to your questions, and I'm assuming you could use the turbo kit from the MR2 with the 1ZZ for your Lotus. Not sure about that though. Anyways, nice car. I've been wanting an MR2 spyder for a while, and with a 2ZZ swap its just like a Lotus

psssh... 6-8 daily!? bah. even at sea level I can run 8-10 daily on my 1ZZ. Before I blew out my clutch I was running 12-14 on stock internals. :)

*granted i'm running at a higher altitude, but it still translates to 8-10 for you sea level folks. :)

Never seen one powered by the 1ZZ before.

I would rather trade in the car for a 2ZZ powered version and save yourself the trouble of forced induction.

    NA reliability and response ftw.

well . . . . i personally would opt for the trd supercharger , its loads better than turbo , especially in and out of the corners , turbos are more for the straits. i say this because here in the states we have the 2zz elise. me and a guy in a yellow one were playing around in the mountains untill i passed him like he was sitting still in a corner , then he didnt want to play anymore . . . might be because the smoking hot blonde next to him was laughing

i have a ae101 4agze in a ae100 sedan weighing less than 2000 lbs. just an example of s/c for ya compared to turbo. no he wasnt turbo , but it was a 2zz , and i had power in a low rpm in the corner to pass , and didnt have to wait for the turbo to spool.

you can always buy smaller pulleys , for the superchargers to create more boost , and you can also buy larger pulley for the crank to produce more boost. the s/c just seems more cost effective in the long run. its covered under warrantee , $100 for a pulley and gain 5-6 lbs. in boost is better than $1g on a larger turbo with slower spool times when you want to increase power.
